2023: System Launch

In mid-June 2023, information appeared that drugs in Singapore, dispensed only through a pharmacy, can now be obtained through smart vending machines. The devices, called PharmaSis, are designed with the participation of pharmacists from Changi General Hospital.

PharmaSis vending machines developed by pharmacists in April 2023 received permission from the Singapore Health Authority to dispense only pharmacy drugs under the guidance of a pharmacist through a teleconsultation. In May 2023, more than 100 patients already used smart vending machines to buy drugs.

PharmaSis Smart Vending Machine

According to the developers, the user initially seeks a teleconsultation with a pharmacist at Changi General Hospital, who assesses his condition, and then recommends appropriate health recommendations and medicines. After introducing smart devices with PharmaSis, users will receive recommendations for choosing medicines on the spot and in real time, among medicines, the system can recommend remedies for common minor diseases such as cough, cold, diarrhea, constipation and fever. Vending machines with PharmaSis also dispense a range of over-the-counter drugs and hearing aid batteries and other audiological products.

The PharmaSis interface has intelligent safety features that ensure the safety and quality of drugs. It is equipped with an automated temperature and humidity control system for storing drugs. The vending machine provides pharmacists with real-time video footage of the drug dispensing process to check if it dispenses drugs of the right type and quality. PharmaSis also features an interactive screen that displays key information about over-the-counter medicines to help consumers with their drug choices.

Pharmacists at Changi General Hospital sought to change the way drugs are only dispensed from pharmacies in Singapore. They intended to provide buyers with timely and convenient access to these medicines, as well as give them the opportunity to manage their health. On June 14, 2023, the hospital plans to install devices with the PharmaSis system at community centers in Simei and at community nursing posts at Changi General Hospital. Pharmacists are also considering extending hours of teleconsultations to gain access to drugs sold only in pharmacies.

It is noted that the PharmaSis system is just one of a growing number of technological innovations that are being worked on at Changi General Hospital to improve patient and population services. The hospital is also actively developing solutions, including the use of automation in drug storage and packaging and delivery to users.[1]
