Oracle Pillar Axiom Storage System Software

Product
Developers: Oracle
Last Release Date: September, 2011
Technology: DBMS,  DWH

The storage system of Oracle Pillar Axiom is a new generation of SAN solutions which provide best in the industry efficiency, scalability and ease in management. Modular system architecture allows not to replace the platform of storage with growth of requirements, and the patented quality management system provides the necessary level of service for all applications.

Pillar Axiom Release 5 Storage System Software

The version of Pillar Axiom Release 5 Software is compatible both to Pillar Axiom 600 Storage Systems, and to the systems of the previous generation of Pillar Axiom 500 and Pillar Axiom 300 that guarantees to all clients of Pillar Axiom the protection of investments which does not have analogs and a possibility of upgrade.

The Pillar Axiom 600 Storage System system consolidates storage resources with an exclusive performance, scalability and the efficiency leading in the industry thanks to the innovative technology of Quality of Service (QoS).

The new version of Pillar Axiom Release 5 Software is an important step forward in consolidation of resources of storage for Oracle databases of Database, Oracle applications of Applications and environments of cloud computing. The solution helps to increase performance and to optimize data management thanks to a combination of modular architecture, QoS technology and the new interface and also simplifies management of multiple data types and applied workloads using convenient profiles of the applications which are previously configured for environments of Oracle.

"Storage systems of Oracle Pillar Axiom Storage Systems always differed from solutions of other suppliers on two parameters: these are the innovative technologies of storage of a corporate class and convenient use with the permanent growth of opportunities for clients, – Mike Workman, the senior vice president for the Storage Solutions direction emphasized. – The new version of Pillar Axiom Release 5 Software improves the patented QoS technology and allows clients to optimize performance of Oracle applications of Applications, Oracle databases of Database and a middleware of Oracle Fusion Middleware which are supported by Axiom storage systems".

The new version of Pillar Axiom Storage Systems helps to reduce costs of the enterprise on data storage, increases their security and also allows clients to scale the system performance and extreme values of capacity of storage without stopping of transactions.

Innovations in Pillar Axiom Release 5 Storage System Software

New features profitable distinguish storage systems of Pillar Axiom Storage Systems from the competing solutions. Improvements of Pillar Axiom Release 5 Software include:

  • Pillar Axiom Storage Domains – allows to separate safely different data (clients, applications or workloads) between groups of drives in one array of storage, at the same time saving access to all amount of data that increases the level of their security and promotes more exact compliance with law. Physical separation of data allows to update them, without stopping work, and in practice implements the principle of "multi-tenancy" (sharing of resources or data by clients subscribers of service) without risk of mutual "mixing" of data on one disk that is peculiar to solutions of other suppliers.
  • Pillar Axiom MaxMan – allows to manage far off several storage systems of Axiom from uniform Java interface. The MaxMan function which is previously configured with profiles the politician of management of storage for Oracle databases of Database and business applications simplifies installation and administration and helps to optimize performance of applications, and even in globally distributed complex environments with numerous diverse applications.
  • Pillar Axiom MaxRep – moves data between several storage systems of Axiom in the synchronous or asynchronous modes, locally, far off and even in multinodal ("multi-hop") configurations, increasing their mobility and level of protection. Applications at the same time save integrity that conforms to requirements of agreements on the service level (Service Level Agreement, SLA) on "target recovery point" (Recovery Point Objective, RPO – to the admissible volume of possible data loss in case of failure) and to "the target recovery time" (Recovery Time Objective, RTO – to an allowed time of idle time in case of failure).

The Oracle corporation announced in October, 2011 that the technology of hybrid columnar compression Hybrid Columnar Compression introduced in Oracle Exadata for the first time is maintained by storage systems of Oracle Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and Pillar Axiom Storage System Software now.

Thanks to it the efficiency of the Hybrid Columnar Compression technology providing a compression ratio from 10 to 50 times for the majority of data sets becomes available to customers who apply the NAS and SAN systems of Oracle to data lifecycle management with archiving directly in the database at online transaction processing (in-database archiving for OLTP) and in data warehouses.

In these environments the Hybrid Columnar Compression technology allows to reduce by 3–5 times the volume of storage systems and also energy consumption and operating costs – due to replacement of the competing storage systems with solutions of Oracle.

"Oracle helps customers to use most effectively IT investments at the expense of innovations and integration and, expanding support of Hybrid Columnar Compression technology on the solutions Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and Pillar Axiom, integrates these opportunities, – Phil Bullinger, the senior vice president of Oracle for storage systems told. – Regardless of what architectural strategy you prefer for data warehouses or archives of Oracle databases, the choice is obvious: the most effective option offers Oracle".

For Oracle data warehouse based on the network device NAS or SAN with a capacity of 1 PB Oracle Storage storage system with the Hybrid Columnar Compression technology providing compression in the ratio 16:1 should have the capacity of only 60 TB while the competing system with compression of database 3:1 needs 334 TB formatted capacities at the cost approximately seven times higher, than for a similar storage system of Oracle.

"The Hybrid Columnar Compression technology will provide to users of Oracle Database 11g Release 2 DBMS unique advantages in terms of cost and efficiency of the environment of databases, – Juan Loaiza, the senior vice president of Oracle for the Systems Technologies direction noted. – Now customers can is transparent to implement archiving directly in the database using the solutions Oracle Exadata, NAS or SAN and to achieve the efficiency of data storage leading in the industry".

For storage systems of Sun ZFS Storage Appliance and Pillar Axiom Storage System implemented in the form of updating to Release 2 Oracle Database 11g DBMS it will be possible to get acquainted with Hybrid Columnar Compression technology in operation at the Oracle OpenWorld conference which is taking place in San Francisco from October 2 to October 6, 2011.
