2020: Microsoft starts the Planetary Computer project
On April 15, 2020 Microsoft announced Planetary Computer project startup (about the engl. "planetary computer") for collecting, storage and data analysis about Earth status. This initiative the American company continued work on preserving of a biodiversity and natural ecosystems within the AI for Earth program.
Planetary Computer represents the platform with artificial intelligence based on Microsoft Azure cloud using machine learning for data analysis from different sources.
Microsoft will use Planetary Computer for creation and implementation of technologies which will help partners and clients to accept business solutions how their actions can affect the environment. For example, to monitor change of the sizes of the woods, to estimate risks of floodings, etc., noted in Microsoft.
One more key principle of the new program is participation in work of the committees developing environmental policy. Microsoft will support the initiatives which purpose — to assess a real ecological situation and to protect an ecosystem at the national and global levels.
The Microsoft partner on development and development of the project of "the planetary computer" calls Esri company which is one of market leaders of geographic information systems.
Microsoft intends to protect more lands by 2025, than itself borrows. This goal will be achieved by means of creation of national parks and reserves, providing lands for public use in the nature protection purposes, etc.
Microsoft AI for Earth is a part of the global project of the company under the name AI for Good directed to use of artificial intelligence technologies for fight against three global problems: environmental pollution (AI for Earth), natural cataclysms and accidents (AI for Humanitarian action) and also supports of people with disabilities (AI for Accessebility).[1]
