2022: Breakdown immediately after sailing to the US
On August 29, 2022, the Royal Navy aircraft carrier Prince of Wales broke down in less than a day after sailing on an "epochal mission" to the United States.
The warship, worth £3 billion ($3.5 billion), stopped at anchor off the southeastern part of the Isle of Wight on August 28, 2022 in the evening after it "malfunctioned."
The vessel, 275 meters long and weighing more than 65 thousand tons, which was fully commissioned only in 2021, was solemnly set sail from Portsmouth on August 27, 2022.
The aircraft carrier remains in the South Coast exercise area while an investigation is carried out into the malfunction, a Royal Navy spokesman said. |
This technical malfunction was another setback for the carrier, which spent just 87 days at sea in its first two years in service.
The ship, which employs 1,600 people, was supposed to head to North America for four months to carry out, according to Navy officials, "an epoch-making mission to shape the prospects for operations using stealth jets and drones off the coast of North America and in the Caribbean."
Speaking before the start of the voyage, the ship's commander, Captain Richard Hewitt, said: The passage of the Navy's Prince of Wales task force across the Atlantic before the end of this year will not only widen the boundaries of British aircraft carrier operations but also strengthen our close working relationship with our closest ally. |
The ship was expected to visit, New York Halifax To Canada to and the Caribbean as part of USA the exercise alongside the Allies, "operating F-35B fighter jets and uncrewed systems that will determine the Royal Navy's aviation of the future."
The Prince of Wales aircraft carrier ("Prince of Wales") is one of two aircraft carriers at the disposal of the British Navy, along with its sister ship Queen Elizabeth ("Queen Elizabeth"). Queen Elizabeth was laid out in 2017 and Prince of Wales in 2019.[1]
