2023: Product Announcement
In late March 2023, the Israeli company GrayMatters Health unveiled an innovative device called Prism for PTSD, designed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The named ailment is a severe mental state that arises as a result of traumatic events that have a super-powerful negative effect on the psyche. Traditionally, two main approaches are used in the treatment of PTSD: psychotherapy and the use of medical drugs. The new development provides for an alternative method in the form of self-regulatory neuromodulation.
A key element of the Prism for PTSD system is a special smart helmet with an array of sensors for registering an electroencephalogram (EEG), that is, for obtaining information about brain activity. The collected indicators are combined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data for the most complete picture. Then a so-called EFP biomarker (EEG-fMRI-Pattern) specific to each patient is formed.
After that, various simulated situations are shown to a person on a computer display, for example, a group of excited or annoyed people in the reception room. The patient tries different thought strategies that can help reduce the significance of the biomarker. If the approach works, the system generates instant feedback, and people in the animation begin to behave more calmly and sit on chairs. This type of neurofeedback allows patients to develop their own strategies to combat PTSD, and they can then apply them when they feel that symptoms are manifesting in the real world. The tests carried out confirmed the effectiveness of the new solution.[1]
