2024: System Development
On December 3, 2024, it became known that European companies Airbus Thales Leonardo intend to deploy a new satellite constellation that can compete. SpaceX Starlink Elona Musk The initiative was called Project Bromo - in honor of the active volcano in. Indonesia
The Bromo project provides for the formation of a new company that will combine the satellite assets of the participants. We are talking about creating a "leader in the field of satellites" modeled on the leading European developer and manufacturer of missile systems MBDA (Matra BAE Dynamics Aérospatiale), which is a joint venture of Airbus, Leonardo and BAE Systems.
Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani told Reuters that participants in the Bromo project are discussing various technical details. He confirmed that the new structure would be based on the MBDA model. This structure appeared in 2001 thanks to the merger of the Anglo-French Matra BAe Dynamics, the French Aérospatiale-Matra Missiles and the Anglo-Italian Alenia Marconi Systems. The company's owners are the structures associated with its founders - BAE, Airbus and Leonardo - with the first two having the most control.
According to Chingolani, in the future, satellites will account for up to 75% of the space economy. Therefore, the implementation of the Bromo project will allow European enterprises to strengthen their position in a rapidly developing market. The largest satellite manufacturers in Europe have traditionally focused on complex spacecraft located in geostationary orbit. However, relatively inexpensive satellites designed for low Earth orbit are becoming increasingly widespread. Such devices are used by the Starlink system.[1]
