2022: Car recall due to falling off wheels

On October 7, 2022, Rivian announced a large-scale recall program for its vehicles: an issue has been identified that could potentially lead to the driver losing control of the car.

The reason for the recall, reportedly, was the incorrect installation of the mount connecting the upper control lever and the swivel fist. It turned out that it may not be sufficiently reliably tightened.

The problem, as already noted, can provoke a loss of control over the car. As of October 7, 2022, at least seven similar cases are known. Fortunately, no one was hurt.

The recall campaign affects virtually all Rivian electric vehicles delivered to end customers. In total, this is about 13 thousand R1T pickups, R1S crossovers and electric vans. Cars were produced from the end of 2021 to September this year.

It should be noted that this is the third Rivian vehicle recall program. So, in May, the company recalled about 500 cars due to a problem related to the passenger airbag. In August, about 200 more cars were recalled, which showed a problem with fastening seat belts.

Meanwhile, Rivian itself is increasing the production of electric cars. It is expected that by the end of this year, approximately 25 thousand cars of these models will come off the assembly line.[1]

Independent wheels allowed Rivian's electric truck to turn around in place

Rivian has shown that the R1T electric pickup it is developing will be able to turn around on the spot thanks to the presence of four separate electric motors for each wheel. The first deliveries of the production version of the electric cap are expected to begin at the end of 2020.

In modern electric vehicles, a scheme with one or two electric motors distributing power to one or two axles is most often used. This allows you to reduce the total weight of the car and its unsprung part, and also simplifies control. Rivian decided to use a R1S scheme with a separate electric motor for each wheel in its R1T electric battery and SUV. It allows you to distribute power as flexibly as possible between the wheels, which is important in the difficult road conditions to which these cars are oriented[2].

In the new video, the company showed another advantage of the four-engine scheme: the possibility of turning in place by analogy with tracked equipment. To do this, the wheels on the left and right sides move in different directions, so the car spins in almost one place, which provides almost the smallest possible turning radius.

In addition to fully independent drive of all wheels, Rivian electric car developers have applied several other unusual technical solutions. For example, these cars will be able to charge each other by connecting using a charging cable, and they will also be able to install additional replaceable battery packs to increase the standard range, which in some versions reaches 640 kilometers. In addition, these electric vehicles also have design features, such as a fully through cargo compartment that opens on both sides for cargo behind the cabin.

Another feature of Rivian is the use of an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) with radar and lidar. Recently, Tesla introduced its eletcropicap with ADAS. The main difference between its Cybertruck electric pickup and most other cars is the unusual minimalist design, which the company itself calls a reference to retrofuturism of the 80s of the last century. The Cybertruck uses one, two or three engines, depending on the version. Production of the Cybertruck is due to begin at the end of 2021, while Rivian plans to begin deliveries of its R1T eletkropicaps at the end of 2020.

Rivian R1T electrical batteries will be able to share energy with each other using a special cable. The recharging feature looks particularly useful considering Rivian is positioning its SUVs as adventure vehicles. If one of the cars gets stuck or breaks, the second will be able to pick up part of its charge and go for help. This can come in handy if there are no charging stations nearby, such as in rural areas or within a national park.

Rivian also introduced a removable auxiliary battery system. They can be installed in the body of the pickup truck, where the contact connectors and circuits of the cooling system are output.

Rivian introduced electric cars capable of charging each other

The pickup RT1 received an independent two-link suspension at the front and a multi-link suspension at the rear, as well as pneumatic adaptive shock absorbers that change ground clearance in the range from 200 to 340 mm.

In each of the wheels of the pickup truck there is an electric motor developing 200 horsepower. In the top configuration with 180 kVt·ch batteries, the total output of the units is 765 liters. from. and 1120 N·m of torque. The pickup is capable of accelerating from a seat to 96 km/h in three seconds, and its top speed is 201 km/h. Rivian also has a seven-seater RS1 SUV, which received units with similar characteristics.[3]
