On December 9, 2021, Russian Space Systems (RKS) announced a platform for controlling unmanned trains through GLONASS. As noted in the holding, the new technology can be used to create a system for controlling the movement of all rolling stock in Russia and outside the country.

The basis of the new platform is navigation and information services and hardware and software of the domestic wide-area differential correction and monitoring system (SDKM-KFD). They provide high-precision GLONASS navigation data, which allows you to control the movement of unmanned trains.

As the head of the Directorate of Navigation and Geodetic Technologies Projects - Deputy General Designer of the RCC Petr Ternova noted, in order to assess and confirm the possibility of using the SDKM-KFD in railway transport, full-scale tests of the system were carried out at the Luga-Sortirovochnaya station of the Leningrad Region. The results showed the accuracy of the system at 50 cm, he said.

According to the developers of the system, its capabilities allow integrating space navigation data, digital models of railway infrastructure and information transmitted from rolling stock into the general control loop.

At the same time, it is added that the introduction and development of this system in remote Russian areas will provide new opportunities for navigation and positioning, including the routes of railway approaches to the Northern Sea Route.
