Product
The name of the base system (platform): RSK of the Tornado
Developers: RSK Technologies, South Ural State University (SUSU)
Technology: Supercomputer

Peak capacity of the computer system based on Intel® Xeon® processors and with Intel® Xeon Phi™ SE10X coprocessors is 236.8 TFLOPS, and it energoeffektivnot improved the previous record in Russia and the CIS more than by 2.5 times, having reached level 995 megaflops / Tue.

At the largest international exhibition on high-performance computing of SC12 the RSK group (#4721 stand) conducting in Russia and the CIS the developer and integrator of "full stroke" of supercomputer solutions of new generation announced creation in the Supercomputer center of the Southern Ural State University (Chelyabinsk) on the basis of the existing infrastructure which is earlier implemented by RSK, the new energy efficient supercomputer "RSK of the Tornado of SUSU". It is the university supercomputer complex, largest in Europe, with the latest Intel® Xeon Phi™ SE10X coprocessors. Peak capacity of this powerful system consisting of 192 computing nodes based on the innovation architecture of "RSK of the Tornado" with liquid cooling is 236.8 TFLOPS (trillions of operations per second).

"The latest Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor allows to improve performance and energy efficiency of our solution with direct liquid cooling based on architecture of "RSK of the Tornado" and to reach more than by 2.5 times of the best indicator of energy efficiency" — Shmelyov Alexey, the chief executive of RSK group noted.

The RSK of the Tornado of SUSU supercomputer considerably will increase computing powers of the Southern Ural State University. On it is going to solve a broad spectrum of scientific and technical and industrial tasks which number in the list of the SKTs SUSU projects at the moment already exceeded 250.

"Our university fruitfully cooperates many years with Intel corporation and RSK group in the field of development of high-performance solutions that allowed us to create de facto the most powerful supercomputer center not only in the Ural Federal District, but also in all east part of Russia from the Urals to the Far East. Already several generations of supercomputers of SUSU are created based on architecture of Intel. And now our new supercomputer "RSK of the Tornado of SUSU" for the first time in Europe among university computer systems is equipped with the latest Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. Use of this powerful and energy efficient supercomputer with a peak capacity of 236.8 TFLOPS will allow us to conduct new large-scale scientific research and to solve broader spectrum of practical social and economic tasks for the purpose of upgrade of economy not only the Ural region, but also the whole country" — Alexander Shestakov, the rector of the Southern Ural State University emphasized.

"In recent years Russia actively created and developed computer centers of the national level, first of all based on the leading universities. Creation in the Southern Ural State University of the university supercomputer, largest in Europe, based on the latest Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors confirms intentions of the Russian state to increase the competitiveness on the world scene due to more active development of intellectual potential of the country thanks to use of the most modern vysokoproizoditelny and energy efficient technologies of Intel" — Christian Morales, the vice president and the general manager of Intel corporation in EMEA region told.

Unique characteristics of solutions based on architecture of "RSK of the Tornado"

The new round of development of the innovation architecture of "RSK of the Tornado" for creation of the energy efficient and compact data processing centers (DPC) and supercomputer complexes allowed specialists of RSK group for the first time in the world to implement direct liquid cooling for standard and in large quantities available server payments (different producers) based on the Intel Xeon processors which are initially created for the traditional systems with air blowing electronic a component together with the latest Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors. This third generation of energy efficient solutions of RSK for segments of high-performance and cloud computing and also DPC.

High-performance solutions with a high computing density based on architecture of "RSK of the Tornado" with liquid cooling are intended for the solution of different tasks of customers. The product line includes: RSK of microdPC (from 16 to 64 nodes), RSK of minidPC (from 64 to 256 nodes) and RSK of DPC (more than 2 racks with high density up to tens PFLOPS).

Among unique characteristics there are architecture of "RSK of the Tornado" and solutions on its basis it should be noted the following:

  • Up to 128 h86-servers in a standard 42U rack of 80х80х200 cm;
  • High density design of blade servers on the basis of standard and in large quantities available server payments;
  • The record energy efficiency — a performance indicator of use of the electric power of PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) reaches value 1.06, record for the HPC-industry (a ratio "energy consumption of all system / energy consumption electronic a component"). So no more than 5.7% of energy consumption are spent for cooling of all system;
  • The record coefficient of computing efficiency reaches 96% on the LINPACK test for the new Intel Xeon processors E5-2690 (the Intel® Turbo Boost technology works all the time that provides a gain of clock rate to 400 MHz during the work with the LINPACK test);
  • Removal more than 100 kW of the electric power from a rack with the help of a unique liquid cooling system of RSK;
  • A possibility of use of the most high-performance models of server Intel processors with heat release of 135 W. For example, Intel Xeon processor E5-2690 (2.9 GHz, 8 cores) and the latest high-performance Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor;
  • High peak computing power is more than 47 TFLOPS in one rack based on architecture of Intel x86 with a set of instructions of Intel AVX and more than 181 TFLOPS using Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors;
  • High density — 74 TFLOPS on sq.m. (only based on Intel Xeon processors) and 283 TFLOPS on sq.m. (with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors);

  • High scalability – to the level of several PFLOPS (tens of racks);

  • Cost efficiency – reduction of operating costs up to 60% (economy of costs for the electric power in rub thanks to operation of the solution of RSK);
  • Compactness – reduction of the area of DPC several times in comparison with traditional solutions on the basis of air cooling;
  • Possibility of use of accelerators and coprocessors (for example, Intel Xeon Phi).
  • The complete integrated software stack "RSK BASIS", optimized for high-performance computing.

2013. High technologies are good results

The RSK of the Tornado of SUSU system installed in 2012 by specialists of RSK on the basis of the existing infrastructure in superkompyyuternom the center of the Southern Ural State University in the new edition of the rating of Green500 takes the 50th position (the previous rating - 40) with an indicator 995.5 megaflops/W, de facto being the most energy efficient university computing cluster in Russia and the CIS countries. It is the university supercomputer complex, largest in Europe, with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors.

Peak capacity of this system consisting of 192 computing nodes on the basis of the innovation architecture of "RSK of the Tornado" with liquid cooling, Intel Xeon processors and with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors is 236.8 TFLOPS, and performance on the LINPACK test reaches 146.8 TFLOPS.
