S-ICD (cardiodefibrillator)

Product
Developers: Boston Scientific

S-ICD is the hypodermic defibrillator intended for correction of violations of a rhythm at patients of a cardiological profile. The implant allows to carry out a defibrillation to patients at whom heart stopped and to save them life. The device developed by Boston Scientific company is equipped with the impulse generator which provides a power supply of a system, monitors work of heart and if necessary sends an electric impulse to a myocardium. The charge is delivered to heart on the electrodes equipped with special sensors which register electric activity of a cardiac muscle.

2017: Death of the patient

In June, 2017 it became known of the death of the person using the implanted S-ICD cardiodefibrillator. The producer reacted to this incident, having called it randomness.

Engineers of Boston Scientific revealed that S-ICD of this patient repeatedly issued atypical amount of energy (comparable to volume which happens at arrhythmia) because of ionizing radiation exposure on a certain zone where memory is located. Repeated delivery of abnormal energy did not allow S-ICD to define violation of a warm rhythm and to correct it that finally led to the death of the patient, says Boston Scientific.

It is noted that the patient did not undergo any radiation therapy, and the lethal dose of radiation was received from the habitat. The producer made three-week internal investigation in laboratory which, in particular, included experiments on modeling of a problem. Experts of the company came to a conclusion that this failure in work of a cardiodefibrillator is single: probability of impact of radiation of the environment on a certain zone of memory of the device leading to failure of an implant is one to 300 thousand.

The company promises to liquidate completely this fault in program updating, however did not call any terms.[1]
