2023: Product Announcement

On October 27, 2023, the Indian company STL announced the creation of the world's thinnest fiber optic cable for telecommunications. Its diameter is only 160 microns. The development was presented at IMC 2023, specializing in products invented and produced in India.

A 160-micron fiber cable passes three times more information through itself than a traditional 250-micron cable.

India is one of the fastest developing countries, therefore, its needs for wide Internet coverage continue to grow. Using a new cable will help save a large amount of money and space. The thinner the cable, the more it will fit in the designated places for communications. Accordingly, the larger the project, the greater the impact of this development. Potentially, the development could be used in the Bharatnet project, in which India needs to lay about 20 million kilometers of cable. Using the new cable can speed up laying time by 15%, as well as reduce the amount of plastic in the soil by 30%.

The new cable meets modern telecommunication standards and complies with the ITU G.657A2 standard.

It is expected that the reduction in the diameter of the fiber fiber when applying the new thin cable will be about 32%. STL said such changes would lead to a revolution in installation, a potential maximum information transfer rate, and also reduce the environmental impact of cables.[1]
