2020: Qihoo 360 which is built in by software sends data to the Chinese servers

On January 8, 2020 it became known that on all modern smartphones and tablets of Samsung company the spy software having communication with China was revealed. Corporate software of Samsung regularly contacts the servers located in the territory of the People's Republic of China and, perhaps, sends to them user data. The fact of sending data to the People's Republic of China for January 8, 2020 was not confirmed.

"Gap" in firmwares of gadgets of Samsung was detected by the user of the Reddit resource under the alias Kchaxcer. Its subject describing the arisen security risk of the user information all from the moment of creation typed per day about 3000 comments.

Kchaxcer reports that in firmwares of Samsung there is a software of the Chinese company Qihoo 360 which is built in Device Care – the corporate Samsung utility which is built in a cover of One UI which Samsung installs on the modern smartphones. The application includes functions of optimization of the device, removal of time and garbage files and also scannings on viruses and other malware.

The Qihoo 360 company deals with issues of information security, however it was repeatedly involved in scandals over privacy and confidentiality. In addition, Qihoo 360 was accused of the hidden (unauthorized) collection of information from devices of users on which its software is set.

Samsung almost instantly reacted to the publication in Reddit. Her representatives confirmed the fact of availability of the software of Qihoo 360 as a part of Device Care.

At the same time Samsung did not comment in any way on the fact that because of existence of the code belonging to Qihoo 360 in Device Care, the application regularly contacts the Chinese servers.

For January 8, 2019 it was not known to whom exactly software of Qihoo 360 can send information from the user devices. Nevertheless, in 2014 the top manager of the company said that Qihoo 360 will transfer any data to the government of China on the first request. In 2017 the company announced the plans about closer cooperation with the authorities of the People's Republic of China in respect of sending to it accumulated information.

Kchaxcer noted that to delete Device Care from the smartphone or the Samsung tablet with basic means it will not turn out – the application system and is a part of a firmware. It also warned that to open to this software access to all files on the device very risky. It is possible to protect personal information from potential copying on the Chinese servers, nevertheless. For this purpose it is necessary to deprive of Device Care of Internet access by installation of the firewall working without receiving the root-rights^[1].
