2021: LPDDR5X DRAM RAM Chip Announcement

On November 9, 2021, Samsung officially announced LPDDR5X DRAM memory chips. They are designed for smartphones and other devices. Compared to the LPDDR5 standard, the new chips provide increased speed.

They will be used in several flagship phones, the release of which is scheduled for 2022. Samsung said LPDDR5X DRAM chips are also 20% more energy efficient than LPDDR5.

Hyper-coupled market segments such as artificial intelligence, augmented reality (AR) and metaverse, which rely on extremely fast large-scale data processing, have been rapidly expanding in recent years. Our LPDDR5X will expand the use of high-performance low-power memory beyond the smartphone market and provide new capabilities for advanced artificial intelligence applications, such as servers and even cars, the company said in a statement.

Unlike the maximum LPDDR5 throughput of 6.4 Gb/s, LPDDR5X can achieve 1.3 times higher performance at processing speeds of up to 8.5 Gb/s. Samsung used its 14 nm technology to mass produce next-generation DRAM chips, and this will be beneficial for various portable devices, since the new standard is 20% more energy efficient than LPDDR5.

Samsung will develop 16 GB LPDDR5X chips, which will produce 64 GB memory packages to move beyond mobile markets. Samsung also said it will work with many chipset manufacturers to ensure that the LPDDR5X standard is compatible with various types of devices.

Since the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy S21 use LPDDR5 chips, the company promises that LPDDR5X will be featured in the upcoming Galaxy S22 family.[1]

2020: Mass production of 16 gigabyte mobile package LPDDR5 DRAM

On February 25, 2020, Samsung Electronics announced the mass production of the industry's first 16-gigabyte mobile package LPDDR5 DRAM for next-generation premium smartphones. This version of the module received advanced 5G and AI functions and due to the added capacity, the memory is more suitable for graphically demanding gaming and smart photography. The release of the previous memory model, 12 GB LPDDR5, Samsung began in July 2019.

data The 16 GB LPDDR5 module has a transfer rate of 5,500 Mbps, which is about 1.3 times higher than the previous generation LPDDR4X mobile memory (4266 Mbps). Compared to the 8-gigabyte LPDDR4X package, the updated mobile DRAM provides over 20% energy savings with 2x capacity. In addition, the 16 gigabyte mobile LPDDR5 package consists of eight 12 gigabit and four 8 gigabit chips, so premium ones smartphones have twice as much DRAM capacity as many laptops games. computers

In the second half of 2020, the company also plans to begin mass production of 16 gigabit LPDDR5 modules. They will be based on the technology of 10-nm (1z) of the third generation in accordance with the development of the 6400 Mbps chipset. Continuously developing such innovations, Samsung intends to strengthen its competitive advantages in the markets of premium mobile devices, high-end PCs and smart cars.
