Enterprise Release
In October 2017, Samsung Electronics announced corporate versions of the flagship smartphones Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8. In terms of technical characteristics, new devices do not differ from the original models, and the main innovations are associated with the use of business software.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition and Galaxy S8 Enterprise Edition received free three-year access to the Knox Configure cloud tool, which allows IT administrators to remotely manage mobile devices and applications through a secure interface according to the needs of companies. For example, you can automatically send SMS messages or track employee locations.
New smartphones use a special corporate firmware, which for three years will be updated free of charge through the wireless Internet (Wi-Fi or cellular communications). Security patches will be installed every month.
Business modifications of devices are subject to an extended warranty from the manufacturer - for three years instead of two in the case of consumer versions.[1]
The rest of the Samsung Enterprise Edition line of phones is no different. It also has security technologies used in the usual Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. In particular, we are talking about a biometric access system based on an image of the iris or fingerprint, as well as an updated Knox 2.8 platform that protects gadgets from unauthorized access and malicious attacks. The tubes retain tiered protection, real-time protection, and hardware encryption.
By the time the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Enterprise Edition and Galaxy S8 Enterprise Edition are announced, only Germany is available, but in the future they will appear in other countries. Release dates in Russia are not reported.
Deception of biometric protection
The biometric identification system in the latest Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphones can be deceived using a photo, members of the German hacker community Chaos Computer Club (CCC) found out. They told about their discovery on the community website on May 22.
The flagship devices Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 +, introduced on March 29, 2017, are able to recognize the owner by the iris pattern. As the manufacturer assures, such a system provides reliable authentication, but hackers easily bypassed it. This required only a good digital camera, printer and contact lens.
Having photographed the owner of the device in night shooting mode from a distance of several meters, German hackers printed out the picture. Then a contact lens was pasted over the photo to give the flat image on the paper the desired depth. When such a picture was brought to the Samsung Galaxy S8, the smartphone could not recognize the fake and unlocked the screen as if it scanned the iris of the real owner.
The discovery made by hackers raises serious concerns, since iris identification is used to confirm purchases in the Samsung Pay payment system. Thus, the owner risks not only personal data stored in the smartphone, but also the contents of the wallet.
In addition, the simplicity of the method is alarming. Given the ubiquitous passion to post their high-quality photos and selfies on the Web, it will not be difficult to get pictures to unlock the device, Bleeping Computer observers say.[2]
If you value the data stored on your smartphone and want to use the device for payments, it is safer to use the traditional method of unlocking using a PIN code than authentication based on biometric information, "commented Dirk Ingling, representative of Chaos Computer Club[3] |
