2022: Chip Announcement

On January 25, 2022, Samsung Electronics announced that the company had developed the world's first hybrid chip for payment cards with protection in the form of a fingerprint scanner. This solution, called S3B512C, is certified according to EMVCo and Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level 6 + standards and meets the specifications of Mastercard Biometric Evaluation Plan Summary for biometric payment cards, according to the press release.

The S3B512C is said to be the industry's first comprehensive security chip-based solution that reads biometric information using a fingerprint sensor. The chip stores and authenticates the encrypted data using an unauthorized hardware platform, and analyzes and processes the data using a secure processor. By integrating three key functions in one chip, the S3B512C can help card manufacturers reduce the number of chips needed and optimize the development of biometric payment cards.

The S3B512C combines a fingerprint sensor, Secure Element (SE) and Secure Processor, adding an additional layer of authentication and security in payment cards. The chip is primarily intended for payment cards, but can also be used in cards that require highly secure authentication, such as identification of a student or pensioner, membership or access to the building by employees, said Kenny Khan, vice president of marketing at Samsung Electronics.

Built-in security lets you shop faster and more securely with your card. Biometric authentication eliminates the need to enter a PIN code on the keyboard, and also prevents fraudulent transactions with lost or stolen cards, since the system checks the identity of the cardholder using a unique and securely stored fingerprint.

The S3B512C security system is equipped with a proprietary fingerprint authentication algorithm and a secure processor that retrieves and analyzes the unique features of the fingerprint placed on the sensor. Anti-fingerprint technology prevents unauthorized users from circumventing the security system using illegal methods, such as artificial fingerprints.[1]
