2019: Sophos created the application free
On September 12, 2019 Sophos made free the utility which allows to place any application in the protected virtual environment ("sandbox") and to exercise full control of its work. It is about the Sandboxie program which also had open source codes.
Before the Sandboxie program extended according to the commercial license, and the version of Sandboxie 5.31.4 released in September, 2019 became the first free. In it the activation code is not requested and there are no restrictions for use of functions which were available only on a paid basis earlier. Thus, all possibilities of the Premium-version of Sandboxie became absolutely free.
"Sandbox" in Sandboxie creates the special protected cover. The program started through Sandboxie has no access to system files, the register of Windows, and will not be able to affect its working capacity as it is executed in the isolated environment in any way.
Applications launch in "sandbox" allows to secure a system against hit in it of viruses and different harmful objects, completely isolating Windows from any undesirable influence.
Besides, Sandboxie does to safer and web surfing. Starting any browser (Google Chrome, "Yandex.Browser", etc.) in "sandbox", it is possible not to be afraid of hit in the computer of viruses and other malwares from network, it is told on the website of developers.
Besides, Sandboxie protects from undesirable updates, is able to monitor e-mail, revealing viruses, trojans, spyware and other harmful elements.
The Sandboxie program developed in Invincea companies which was purchased afterwards by Sophos. The buyer did not begin to change licensing model till certain time — to a release of the version of Sandboxie 5.31.4.
Sandboxie was never an important component of business of Sophos, and some time time we considered versions of future this project — the marketing director of the products Sophos Seth Geftic reported. |
According to him, project closure would be the simplest and least expensive step, however "we too love this technology to see how it vanishes".
Moreover, we too love community Sandboxie to do it — he said.[1] |
