2021: Full-scale launch of the service using cards of all banks

On March 1, 2021, a full-scale launch of the Look and Go service took place in Belarus, which allows you to pay for travel in the Minsk metro through facial recognition technology.

According to the press service Belarusbank (initiator of this project), from March 1, the service is available to the cardholder of Mastercard all Belarusian banks. It can be used at the metro stations "Nemiga," "Institute of Culture" and "Lenin Square." To do this, using - SMS banking, you need to add your card to the M-banking application in any Belarus Bank info book.

To pay for travel in the subway, it is enough for a passenger to look at the biometric terminal, having previously completed several steps:

  • download and install the Belarusbank M-banking application;
  • select the Look and Go tab;
  • take a picture of your face before you go.

When moving through the turnstile, the biometric system considers facial features, and payment will be written off from the payment card. It is noted that this payment service will work on an ongoing basis.

According to Viktor Bezrukov, head of the digital transformation department of Belarusbank, the data that is transmitted between the bank and the Minsk metro are encrypted, and the impression of the photo is not transmitted. Only biometric data is transmitted, which is a set of digits that will not provide any client with information, he stressed.

Bezrukov also said that the system uses machine learning and neural networks that allow you to constantly improve a person's profile.

We are getting older, we grow ears, nose, chin may appear. The system is self-taught and allows you to recognize a person taking into account his age characteristics, "he explained, adding that the system will not be able to confuse similar people and debit money from someone else's card. The technology was successfully tested on twins.[1]

2020: Service Start Up

At the end of June 2020, the Minsk metro launched a facial recognition system to pay for travel. The service called "Look  and Go," developed by Belarusbank using the technologies of VisionLabs, is still available at only one station - Lenin Square.

VisionLabs experts have created  a facial recognition algorithm, which, according to  Belasrubank, is perfect  and allows us to distinguish even twins  with an accuracy of  99.9%. The system  identifies people even  in a mask.

To use the "See  and Go Through" service, you need to download the Belarusbank mobile application (available for iOS and Android), register and choose a biometric service from the list of services. Using a mobile phone camera, a face impression is created. This digital image is stored on the server without the photo itself. When passing through the turnstile, the biometric terminal scans the face and searches the database for compliance.

After primary identification, individual features are determined by fixed points - for example, the distance between the eyes, the length of the chin line, and the width of the nose are taken into account. The system checks 75 to 125 dots on the face to build a digital fingerprint that is used to find matches in the biometric database.

Then other algorithms search the  pre-created database  and give a percentage of similarity  with the sample of data being searched. If the percentage of similarity is high, the face is considered recognized.

Travel money  is charged  from a card that is tied by a "passenger  to the face impression ID  in the bank's mobile application. Money will be charged instantly  for one trip, and the passenger can pass through the turnstile in 2 seconds. At the same time, in order to use the service, it is not necessary to be a client of Belarusbank[2]
