2023: Internet Cable Introduced with Record Data Transfer Rate of 5Gbps
On December 4, 2023, the South Korean industrial corporation LS Cable & System announced the development of a new Power over Ethernet (PoE) cable with the highest bandwidth in the world, reaching 5 Gbps. A product called SimpleWide 2.0 can be used to connect CCTV cameras, audiovisual equipment, digital signage, etc.
PoE technology allows you to transfer electrical power to a remote device along with data through a standard twisted pair in an Ethernet network. The SimpleWide 2.0 cable, in addition to speeds up to 5 Gbps, supports up to 100 watts of power to power devices at a maximum distance of 180 meters. For comparison, previous record values were throughput of 1 Gbps and power at 30 watts at a distance of about 200 meters.
The increased speed supported by the SimpleWide 2.0 cable will enable high-definition video streaming and data backup on remote IoT devices and other hardware. Increased to 100W PoE power makes it possible to use the cable to power next-generation surveillance cameras with various sensors, motion detection functions, etc.
In a number of scenarios, SimpleWide 2.0 is expected to be an alternative to more expensive fiber optic cables. Compared to traditional fiber, costs can be reduced by 40-50%, as there is no need to lay electrical cables and install sockets to power equipment. As LS Cable & System notes, SimpleWide 2.0 will be especially in demand in public places such as subways, parks, schools, sports grounds, smart buildings and other facilities.[1]
