On October 17, 2023, Dutch researchers from the Academic Medical Center (UMC) in Amsterdam reported on the development of a smart helmet that allows you to assess the severity of a stroke even before the patient enters the hospital. The data obtained with the device make it possible to quickly determine the necessary therapy regimen.
Scientists say millions of people around the world face ischemic stroke each year. This is an acute cerebrovascular accident, in which the flow of blood to a particular part of the brain is significantly difficult or completely stopped. The most common cause of ischemic stroke is clogging of the vessel with a blood clot. The development of the disease in many cases becomes the cause of death of the patient, and therefore an accurate assessment of the consequences of stroke is extremely important in terms of saving lives.
The helmet developed by Dutch specialists is equipped with special sensors that allow you to remove the electroencephalogram (EEG) directly in the ambulance. The indicators obtained give doctors the opportunity to establish the type of stroke and develop an appropriate strategy for action. In particular, with microinsult, drugs that thin blood and dissolve blood clots can be prescribed to a patient. In more serious cases, hospitalization is required, followed by thrombectomy, that is, surgery aimed at removing a thrombus from the vessels.
When it comes to stroke, time can literally save a patient's brain. The sooner we start the right treatment, the better the result. If the diagnosis is already clear in the ambulance, a person can be immediately sent to the desired hospital, which saves precious hours, "said neurologist Jonathan Coutinho, one of the authors of the project.[1] |
