2024: Product Announcement
In early August 2024, Sol announced a wearable called the Sol Reader. This is said to be the first VR e-book designed to make the reading process more comfortable and immersive.
The gadget is a hybrid of VR glasses and a traditional reader. It is equipped with E Ink electronic paper-based displays that only consume energy when the image is redrawn. This ensures a long battery life, which, according to technical characteristics, reaches 25 hours per battery charge. Replenishment of energy supply is carried out through the USB Type-C port - this takes about two hours.
The Sol Reader headset is designed with an eye to long-term wearability. Adjustable silicone stops are provided in the bridge of the nose, and the device weighs a little over 100 g. The E Ink display is equipped with a side backlight with the ability to change brightness. In addition, a customizable optical system is mentioned, so most visually impaired users will not have to wear contact lenses while reading. The developer emphasizes that the gadget looks more like sunglasses than a virtual reality headset, so the head belt is not required to hold.
The Sol mobile application for Android and iOS operating systems allows you to download books in.epub format. For control, a small remote control is used that connects to the Sol Reader via Bluetooth: it can be used to turn pages, save bookmarks and adjust backlight settings. As of early August 2024, the wearable reader is offered at an estimated price of $400 in a black version with golden accents.[1]
