2022: Start of sales of the device
On November 29, 2022, Sony Group announced a system called Mocopi, which allows you to transfer user movements to the metaverse. The novelty will go on sale in Japan in January 2023 at an estimated price of $360.
The Mocopi consists of six small wearable sensors in the form of washers of different colors: two sensors are mounted on the wrists and ankles, one on the back and head. Logged user actions are converted into avatar movements in the metaverse. You can use the system together with mobile applications like VRChat for smartphones running Android and iOS. The sensors are mounted on straps and do not constrain movement. Power is provided by batteries, the charge level of which can be controlled through a related application.
Mocopi's work is based on Sony's patented algorithms. It is claimed that this solution implements high-precision motion measurement using several compact sensors - without the need to buy specialized expensive equipment. It is reported that on December 15, 2022, Sony will introduce a software development kit (SDK) that links motion capture data with metaverse services. New fitness applications, games, and other interactive tools can be created using the SDK.
The Mocopi system is designed not only for metaverse users, but also for animation professionals and filmmakers. The release of the kit is expected to help Sony strengthen its position in virtual and augmented reality by moving beyond the console game market. The company already has a PlayStation VR headset, and a PlayStation VR2 device for PlayStation 5 consoles will be released in early 2023.[1][2]
