SuperMUC

Product
The name of the base system (platform): SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
Developers: IBM
Technology: Supercomputer

During the celebration of 50-year anniversary of the Computer center of Leibniz - Leibniz-Rechenzentrum (LRZ) of Academy of Sciences of Bavaria in Garkhinge, Germany in the summer of 2012 – the IBM company officially provided the most powerful and high-speed supercomputer in Europe solving difficult scientific tasks in the field of physics and dynamics of liquids and working at the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server platform. SuperMUC in June, 2012 took the 4th place in list 500 of the most high-speed supercomputers in the world. SuperMUC on the System X iDataPlex platform of IBM company is equipped with more than 155,000 cores of processors which provide in total maximum capacity more than 3 petaflops (units of computer performance).

Feature of SuperMUC is the innovative technology of cooling of a system with warm water developed by IBM company which basis the system of blood circulation in a human body is. As a result of SuperMUC spends for 40% less energy on cooling of systems, than "classical" computer centers, and also allows to accumulate and use the saved energy for heating of buildings of the Computer Center of Leibniz.

"SuperMUC is several times more effective than the predecessor. As necessary we use frequency scaling, - function of the Linux platform based on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. It allows to work most effectively and optimum with applications and means that we everywhere where perhaps, we use recently developed enegosberezheniye mechanisms on platforms of Linux", - Other Herbert Guber (Dr. Herbert Huber) the Head of department of the High-performance systems in the Computer Center of Leibniz says.

"Since 1998 in the Computer Center we rely on SUSE in all that concerns area of high-performance computers. In the beginning it was important for us that the technical functionality which other Linux distribution kits did not have could offer SUSE to us that", professor Dr. Arndt Bode heading the Computer Center of Leibniz explains. "But also the geographical proximity, direct link between departments of development and sales departments in SUSE and also fast reaction was important from technical support. And now it is for us big advantage and the answer to a question why all our high-performance computers and the majority of other systems works at SUSE Linux Enterprise Server".

"In the past we had several occasions to think of change of the operating system, but SUSE Linux Enterprise Server always facilitated our choice as this platform is reliable and highly productive", - Other Huber comments. "Cooperation between SUSE and our suppliers of hardware always took place smoothly. For example, the general functionality which was applied then on the Linux platform was developed. Such cooperation was premises to successful projects, such as SuperMUC".

"We very much are proud of our long cooperation with the Computer Center of Leibniz. Thanks to the scalability and performance of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server became one their most popular operating systems for high-performance computers. For SUSE today's rewarding of SuperMUC is big progress in the direction of experienced research works of high-performance computing", Meike Chabowski, the managing director of department of product marketing of HPC of SUSE company says.
