2025: Reaching record firing range of 15 kilometres

The Russian heavy flamethrower system of the Tosochka TOS-2 has reached a record range of 15 kilometers thanks to the modernization of the TBS-MZ missile. This was reported by representatives of the defense industry on April 22, 2025, noting that such an improvement significantly increases the combat potential of the system.

The increased firing range has been achieved thanks to a number of technical improvements. Engineers used more highly pulsed fuel for the rocket's solid propellant engine and made the thermobaric warhead slightly lighter while maintaining its combat properties. Initially, the estimated range of a 220 mm missile was declared precisely as 15 kilometers, but in fact it was slightly less.

TOS-2 Tosochka is an improved version of the Solntsepek TOS-1A system and is the most advanced machine in the line of Russian heavy flamethrower systems. The increased range of fire made it possible to make important changes to the design. The new system uses the chassis of the Ural-63706-0120 Tornado-U truck with a 6x6 wheel arrangement instead of the previously bulky chassis of the T-72 tank.

The firing range is TOS-2 four times higher than that of the Pinocchio TOS-1 and more than twice that of the Solntsepek TOS-1A. This allows the installation to be at a safe distance from the enemy's positions, which in turn led to the possibility of abandoning heavy tank armor. The light and mobile chassis allows the installation to quickly advance to the position and quickly leave.

The vehicle is equipped with an armored cockpit, which houses the crew and all guidance equipment. The modern fire guidance and control system is another hallmark of the TOS-2. The installation is equipped with a crane-manipulator, which made it possible to abandon a separate transport-loading machine. The package of guides is loaded by the crew.[1]
