2022: Device Announcement

On November 21, 2022, LG Display unveiled an audio device called the Thin Actuator Sound Solution, the next generation car speaker. The developer calls the novelty an "invisible" speaker: thanks to its small size and weight, the product can be hidden in almost any part of the vehicle interior.

The dimensions of the speaker are 150 × 90 mm with a thickness of only 2.5 mm, and the solution weighs about 40 g. Such characteristics were achieved by excluding traditional components such as a coil, diffuser and magnet from the design. Thin Actuator Sound Solution uses film excitation technology that allows you to transmit vibrations to various materials inside the car.

It is claimed that an unusual speaker is capable of forming a rich three-dimensional sound with the effect of presence. The compact form factor allows the novelty to be placed in various parts of the car's interior, such as the dashboard, ceiling upholstery, racks and headrests. As a result, space is released, which is usually occupied by familiar columns. At the same time, innovative architecture makes it possible to hide audio components from view without compromising sound quality.

In addition, LG Display has eliminated the use of rare earths such as neodymium, which are commonly used in standard speakers. This improves the sustainability of Thin Actuator Sound Solution.

The novelty has already received the CES 2023 Innovation Award in the Entertainment and Safety in the Car category from the Consumer Technology Association. It is said that specialists from a large audio company took part in the creation of the speaker, but its name was not specified. The speaker is scheduled to enter the commercial automotive market in the first half of 2023.[1]
