Toshiba a XG series — a line of consumer solid-state disks (SSD).

XG6 on the basis of 96-layer three-dimensional a flash memory

On August 6, 2018 the Toshiba Electronics Europe company provided a series of solid state drives on the basis of own 96-layer three-dimensional BiCS FLASH flash memory. SSD of XG6 series are intended for segments of consumer PCs, high-performance mobile devices, the built-in and game systems and also for infrastructure of data processing centers as boot drives of servers, drives for caching and maintaining magazines and normal data storage.

According to the statement of the developer, the technology a flash memory of Toshiba BiCS FLASH with storage of 3 data bits in one storage cell (three-level cells, TLC) increases performance, density of storage and efficiency of SSD. The combination of technology process of formation of 96-layer structure, modern circuit engineering and a production technology allows to increase the specific capacity of the module of crystals approximately by 40 percent on comparison from 64-layer three-dimensional a flash memory.

Drives XG6 series are produced in in a form factor of the M.2 2280 with the PCI Express Gen 3 and NVM Express interfaces of version 1.3a. XG6 series, according to the developer, is selected with a combination of efficiency and performance: at energy consumption of 4.7 W or less data transfer rate reaches 3180 Mbps for consecutive reading and nearly 3000 Mbps for consecutive record, at the same time read performance and records with random access is up to 355,000 and 365,000 input-output operations per second (IOPS) respectively.

The Toshiba company noted the following additional features of drives:

  • security: the self-ciphered models of disks with support of TCG Opal of version 2.01 and also support of the Block SID functions and the digital signature;
  • support of the user selection of reserve area using the NVMe command;
  • high performance of consecutive transactions;
  • the advanced SLC buffer for performance improvement of the drive during the work with heavy loads.

XG6 series drives intended for a broad spectrum of tasks with high intensity of reading with a priority of energy efficiency, peak capacity and compact sizes will be issued with a capacity of 256, 512 and 1024 gigabytes, noted in Toshiba.

XG5-P on the basis of 64-layer a 3D flash memory of BiCS

On January 18, 2018 the Toshiba Memory Europe GmbH company announced expansion of a series of solid-state disks (SSD) of NVMe of XG5 on the basis of 64-layer a 3D flash memory of BiCS. In the XG5-P family premium devices are provided to bigger capacity with the doubled performance up to 55% in all range of read operations and record with random access in comparison with standard SSD disks XG5. The XG5-P series is developed taking into account requirements of workloads of high-performance PCs, computer games and transfer of content. Disks have capacity to the 2nd terabyte (TB), saving at the same time characteristics of superthin high-speed devices of data storage with high energy efficiency.

For the purpose of formation of the complete range of SSD disks from basic drives for notebooks to devices for corporate systems with high intensity of reading the Toshiba company optimized XG5 series for further speeding up of the applications requiring the improved input-output performance with random access. Thanks to the PCI Express (PCIe) interface of the 3rd generation with 4 lines and NVMe of version 1.2.1 SSD disks of the XG5-P series provide high performance: speed of consecutive reading reaches 3000 Mbps, consecutive record – 2200 Mbps, and the number of transactions of any read and write per second (IOPS) – 320,000 and 265,000 respectively. At achievement of such indicators of data transfer rate the high energy efficiency of devices was saved: energy consumption of the SSD disks XG5-P is less than 60 MW.

The XG5-P series – the first SSD disks of Toshiba with a capacity of 2 TB in a form factor of M.2. In them the body of 1 TB of own development allowing to double the maximum volume of storage in comparison with standard devices of XG5 series on the same one-sided module M.2 2280 2,23 mm thick is used. Saving a uniform form factor for all devices of different capacity in the XG5 and XG5-P series, Toshiba simplifies development of platforms with flexible opportunities of data storage.

Devices of the XG5-P series have high reliability and stability of work. In a series models with a capacity of 1 and 2 TB will be provided. Also the self-ciphered models of disks (SED) with support of the TCG Opal specification of version 2.01 therefore devices of the XG5-P series will be able to be used in a broad spectrum of solutions with performance priority and also the corporate systems requiring a certain security level will be offered.
