2019: Start of the supercomputer

On June 18, 2019 IBM announced development as the company claims, the most powerful supercomputer in the world in the business sector. A system under the name Pangea III is started in oil corporation of Total.

Work of Total Pangea III requires 1.5 MW of energy that it is three times less in comparison with the previous model. Counting on 1 petaflop of performance innovation consumes 10% less electricity.

According to the statement of Total, a new system increases the computing power of the equipment of the company approximately by 5 times — to 31.7 petaFLOPS that about 170,000 notebooks combined are equivalent. Besides, Pangea III triples resources for data storage — to 76 PBytes.

Judging by characteristics, Pangea III takes the 11th place in the world on the capacity of supercomputers from the rating of Top 500.

Pangea III are the cornerstone the IBM Power9 processors optimized for work with artificial intelligence. Chips during the work together with accelerators increase both the speed, and energy efficiency during the work with high-performance computing, the press release says.

Additional computing powers of Pangea III increase operational efficiency of Total. It allows Total to reduce geological risks at exploration and development of a subsoil, to accelerate studying of fields and project implementation and also to increase the cost of our assets at the expense of the optimized field transactions, and all this at smaller expenses — the president of division of Total Exploration & Production Arnaud Breuillac said.

Total is going to use the supercomputer for data processing at a stage of exploration and development of a subsoil that it was possible to define precisely location of hydrocarbons underground. Besides, the company will be able to implement new methods of bedded modeling better to predict the amount of production of resources.[1]
