2025: Product Release
UroMems has announced the release of the UroActive smart implant for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in men. The device is based on a myoelectromechanical system.
Stress incontinence - a condition in which there is an involuntary release of urine as a result of increased intraperitoneal pressure: the cause can be intense physical activity, cough, laughter, sneezing, lifting weights, etc. In men, the most common causes of the ailment are surgical removal of the prostate gland and radiation therapy in the treatment of prostate cancer, when damage to the sphincter muscle occurs. According to UroMems, the disease affects approximately 40 million Americans and 90 million Europeans. Incontinence negatively affects the quality of life of patients due to the constant fear of being in an awkward situation. For this reason, a person can limit their work and social activity.
The UroActive product is placed around the urethral duct. The activity of each patient is measured in real time using modern micro-sensors located inside the implant. Advanced algorithms analyze the collected indicators and, based on the results obtained, generate control commands for the myoelectromechanical system to create the necessary urethral pressure.
The operation of the system is monitored automatically depending on the activity of the patient. Urethral pressure can be increased with exertion, which ensures urinary retention during periods of activity. When the patient is at rest, tissue compression can be weakened, potentially reducing the risk of erosion or other negative effects. Thus, the quality of life is significantly improved.[1]
