2022: Tank Announcement
On November 7, 2022, a modification of the VT4- VT4A1 tank was presented. It can launch drones and intercept anti-tank missiles.
VT4 is the export name of MBT-3000, the new generation main battle tank (MBT) fully developed and produced in China by Norinco. The VT4 tank is in service with China, Nigeria, Pakistan and Thailand. The tank was unveiled at AirShow China in November 2022, a new upgraded version of the VT4 featuring additional improvements in terms of protection and firepower. According to information released by the Chinese Ministry of Defense, the VT4A1 is now equipped with an active protection system (APS) and is capable of launching small attack drones.
The layout of the VT4A1 is similar to the original VT4: the driver's seat is in the front of the case, the tower is in the middle, and the power plant is in the rear. The turret was slightly redesigned, for example, the smoke grenade launcher unit was removed and replaced with an APS radar detection system mounted on each side of the turret.
Each side of the tower roof is equipped with a launcher, which is part of the APS and consists of two tubular launchers capable of firing 360 ° countermeasures around the tank. Each launcher can launch HE (High Explosive) high-explosive grenades used to intercept various types of threats, including ATGM (Anti-Tank Guided Missile), RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenades) and HEAT shells fired from tank guns.
VT4A1 is presumably equipped with a new armor package, since the design of the front and side parts of the tower differs from the original VT4. New armor plates are also installed on the sides of the hull, which protect the entire upper part of the suspension. VT4A1 retained the original suspension, consisting of six large twin support wheels on rubber tires with a driving gear at the front, a driven gear at the rear, and support rollers.
A new ERA (Explosive Reactive Armor) armor is also installed on the roof of the tower to increase the protection of the tank from air attacks or drones. The tank is also equipped with a new panoramic sight.[1]
