2025: Addressing an Operation and Service Management Console Vulnerability for Service Providers
Backup Solutions Developer Veeam Software has fixed a vulnerability in Veeam Service Provider Console, a management platform used by backup and disaster recovery service providers. The CVE-2024-45206 safety defect (BDU:2024-1170) was discovered by PT SWARM expert Nikita Petrov. The vendor was notified of the threat as part of the responsible disclosure policy and issued a software update. Positive Technologies announced this on February 28, 2025.
Vulnerabilities such as SSRF, which received a score of 6.5 on the CVSS 3.0 scale, were affected by versions from 7.x to 8.0.x inclusive. Its exploitation could hypothetically put companies at risk of attacks on internal networks, as it allowed an attacker to send arbitrary HTTP requests to external or internal resources on behalf of the server. To fix the defect, you need to install Veeam Service Provider Console version 8.1.0.21377 and higher as soon as possible.
Veeam solutions, according to the developer, are used by more than 550 thousand customers from different, countries including 74% of companies from the Forbes Global 2000 list. The vendor's products are most actively used in,, and USA. Germany France Russia is in 13th place in their distribution. Veeam holds the largest market share of any global provider for software replication and, data protection for the eighth consecutive year, is the leader Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Solutions in the analytical agency's report. Gartner
Veeam Service Provider Console could potentially be attacked directly from the wide area network. In January 2025, according to open sources, there were 2587 vulnerable systems in the world. Most installations are in the USA (26%), Turkey (20%), Germany and the UK (6% each), Canada and France (5% each). Russia accounts for less than 1% of installations.
Before the release of the update, the vulnerability primarily posed a risk to large enterprise enterprises - the main users of Veeam Service Provider Console, - said Nikita Petrov, senior specialist in the penetration testing department, security analysis department of Positive Technologies. - Attackers could initiate a request from the server to a resource that does not have external access and be able to interact with it. This would allow them to obtain information about the victim's network infrastructure and thus simplify the conduct and subsequent development of attacks. For example, one of the possible consequences of penetration could be the exploitation of vulnerabilities contained in internal systems. |
