Symantec NetBackup 5220

Specialized backup devices provided by Symantec to Russian customers include NetBackup 5220 and Symantec Backup Exec 3600. Their uniqueness lies in the fact that the installation takes less than half an hour and includes hardware, software and media for deduplication. For comparison, to implement a number of similar solutions from other vendors, companies require the efforts of several IT specialists who need to integrate multiple solutions for tapes, disks, deduplication, physical and virtual snapshots and backups. Another plus of Symantec's new solutions is an integrated solution from a single vendor.

The NetBackup 5220 is a solution that simplifies backup and recovery. The device combines the appropriate software - NetBackup 7.5 and scalable storage up to 72 TB, as well as end-to-end deduplication. This protects data in both virtual and physical systems. The device is controlled from a single console. Backup consolidates and compresses stored data to save disk space, saving time and money.

In addition to the NetBackup 7.5 software, the NetBackup 5220 features V-Ray technology to visualize resources in VMware and Hyper-V environments. Customers are offered intelligent end-to-end deduplication at source, backup server, and target. Maximum backup performance enables load balancing. You can also manage backups, snapshots, and policy-based replication. Recovery support is implemented at the application level and VMware vSphere 5.

All these features, as well as many others, are designed to help simplify the backup environment, including because the use of the NetBackup 5220 device allows you to abandon the purchase and installation of a separate backup server, since this device solves all tasks.

Symantec NetBackup 7.6

The updated NetBackup 7.6 core package now includes the NetBackup Accelerator for VMware module, which provides up to 100x faster backups than NetBackup 7.5, and the new NetBackup Instant Recovery for VMware module restores virtual machines 800 times faster. In addition, new features in vCloud Director and vCenter make it easier to manage and automate tasks in virtualized environments. Even images of 2TB virtual machines can now be restored in just a minute.

Virtual machine data is now stored and transferred using the Network File System (NFS) protocol, and the data itself is stored on the VMware ESXi host. As a result, the operator can load the virtual machine from the ESXi host, and then use the vMotion console to transfer the virtual machine from temporary storage to a permanent image bank. The backup image does not change in any way - all that users see are running and available virtual machines. All these operations take no more than 60 seconds.

The NetBackup 7.6 package also supports incremental backups of virtual machines, so that after a primary full backup, all changes to the data are automatically transferred to the image, and then they can be used for efficient full recovery. According to Symantec's own data, incremental copying of more than 600 virtual machines with a size of 100 GB takes only about an hour.

A special focus is on integrating Symantec technologies with the VMware vCloud Director management platform, which allows you to control virtual machine backups through VMware's proprietary server cloud console. This integration takes automation to a new level - for example, by working directly with the vCloud Director API, administrators can set automatic backups of newly created virtual machines. In addition, reporting and data recovery through the plug-in to the vSphere system are supported.

According to Symantec, integration with VMware technologies is available for all software and hardware implementations of NetBackup, so that up to 4,800 virtual machines can be serviced on one such complex - a significant increase compared to NetBackup 7.5, which supported only 3,000 virtual machines per instance.

Symantec NetBackup 7.5

The new version of NetBackup 7.5 provides 100 times the performance of backup operations, offers more convenient and functional data recovery tools, and simplifies the discovery of important information in archives for litigation.

Symantec has also entered into an extended agreement with NetApp and is ready to offer its customers a component called NetBackup Replication Director. Enterprise IT professionals will be able to centrally manage NetBackup and NetApp Snapshots features, as well as replication mechanisms (SnapVault and SnapMirror). This approach will minimize the costs and risks associated with multiple backup and recovery tools.

2011: Symantec NetBackup 7.1

Version 7.1 introduces Virtual Machine Intelligent Policy for VMWare-based environments, which automates the discovery and protection of virtual machines with existing data protection policies. Unlike other data protection systems, the NetBackup 7.1 package is well suited for faster migration to virtual machines in large organizations or when building a private cloud.

In addition to extensive virtual machine support, NetBackup 7 offers easy-to-use reporting tools as well as faster disaster recovery with proprietary deduplication technologies. In addition, Release 7.1 extends support for Oracle and MySQL database servers. Symantec offers a special license to quickly upgrade to NetBackup 7 from previous versions, including NetBackup 6.0 and 6.5. Symantec NetBackup technology is also available as separate devices - these devices have proven to be an alternative to quickly migrating an enterprise network to a NetBackup 7 data protection system.

Among the new features in NetBackup 7.1, automation of virtual machines with the new Virtual Machine Intelligent Policy technology stands out - thanks to improved resource control in the VMware cloud vSphere VMware virtual machines are backed up at the highest speed. Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) provides additional acceleration in the archiving of virtual machines - it is now available for virtual Linux machines running VMware hypervisors.

On-demand recovery from anywhere in the world is implemented through automatic image replication - the customer can quickly copy the desired images to a new site or to a new NetBackup domain. NetBackup RealTime technology, which provides continuous data protection, now supports VMware environments, so customers no longer need to set a backup window - this significantly reduces the burden on large VMware servers and provides near-instant recovery of entire systems.

  • The shortest path to a virtual data center: Virtual Machine Intelligent Policy's Smart Policy technology automates the discovery and protection of virtual machines. With improved control and monitoring of VMware resources vSphere VMware virtual machines are backed up with even higher performance.
  • Virtual backup is one and a half times faster: Granular Recovery Technology's patented single-item recovery technology instantly restores files and folders from the virtual machine backup image. This technology is now also available for Linux virtual machines in VMware environments. This allows users to save up to 50% of backup time in virtual environments, simplify administration, and speed recovery of individual files.
  • Accelerated Disaster Recovery - New technology to automatically replicate backups between sites or different domains NetBackup provides instant access to replicated backups at another site for faster disaster recovery.
  • Continuous data protection and instant recovery- NetBackup RealTime technology, which provides continuous data protection, now supports VMware environments. This technology allows you to get rid of the backup window, reduce the load on VMWare servers with large amounts of data, and allow you to perform simultaneous data recovery of a large number of VMWare servers very quickly.
  • Compliance: NetBackup 7 has advanced backup access tracking and auditing capabilities to help administrators meet compliance and security standards.
