2021: Volvo Cars announces its car OS

In early July 2021, Volvo Cars announced its decision to engage in independent software development. One of the first such products of the company will be a new branded operating system called VolvoCars.OS.

According to the press service of the automaker, the VolvoCars.OS will become an umbrella system for Volvo electric vehicles. It will combine the company's various platforms existing in the car and in the cloud, creating a single consistent software operating environment. The future product will be based on the development of the operating systems Android Automotive OS, QNX, Autosar and Linux.

Volvo Cars introduced its car OS

With various application programming interfaces (APIs), including the previously Extended Vehicle API, the VolvoCars.OS, with the consent of the client, will provide developers with access to existing features in the car (for example, car sensors and sensor data), the user interface, and cloud functions such as fleet data. This will allow you to create new services and applications for Volvo cars, the company explained.

By creating the software ourselves, we can increase the speed of development and improve your Volvo faster than is happening now, "comments Henrik Green, technical director of Volvo Cars. - Just as it happens on your smartphone or computer, new software and features can be quickly obtained with wireless updates, which will eventually make your Volvo even better and more enjoyable to operate.
