2025: Identifying a Defect - A Trunk Door Falls Off

In early October 2025, Volvo announced the recall of all-electric EX90 crossovers. These cars have a problem associated with the electric drive of the trunk door.

As reported in the notification of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration USA (NHTSA), in defective machines there is a possibility of disconnecting one of the elements of the rear door lifting mechanism. If this happens, the trunk lid may fall unexpectedly, which creates a risk of injury to people nearby.

The problem first became known in March 2025, when Volvo received a corresponding complaint from one of the owners of the crossover. The second incident occurred a month later during internal car testing. As a result, the company initiated a detailed investigation into the causes of the defect. It turned out that it arose through the fault of a parts supplier who "accidentally mixed good products with defective ones."

The recall includes 1119 Volvo EX90 cars, which were produced from April 22, 2024 to February 17, 2025. Specialists of service centers will perform the necessary repair work free of charge for vehicle owners.

Volvo says that in order to prevent the problem from reoccurring, the supplier of the parts has automated the quality control process. Now, a specialized robotic manipulator is used to screen out defective products, which eliminates the possibility of mixing such elements with suitable components.

The Volvo EX90 crossover is equipped with an electric power plant with a maximum power of 517 horsepower and a battery with a capacity of 111 kVt·ch, providing a range of up to 761 km. It takes about 10% minutes to replenish the energy reserve from 80% to 30 at the fast charging station.[1]
