2017: Azure SQL Databases is upgraded

On May 11, 2017 the Microsoft company declared upgrade of Azure SQL Databases.

The preliminary version of Managed Instance available within the closed program was a part of Azure SQL Database. It provides to SQL Server users compatibility at the level of a copy (instance-level compatibility) and simplifies migration of the existing SQL applications of Server on Azure SQL Database.

Also the functionality of Threat Detection and the preliminary version of support of Graph became available.

2015: Microsoft issued the preview of Azure SQL Database

On April 30, 2015 the Microsoft company submitted the preliminary version of the scalable Azure SQL Database database.

Using Azure SQL Database independent software suppliers and SaaS services developers will be able to use resources of thousands of databases in a public cloud and to receive an optimal ratio of costs and productivities by means of effective use of resources on demand.

2013: Windows Azure SQL Databases

Windows Azure SQL Databases (SQL Server Data Services, after SQL Services, after Windows Azure SQL Databases is initial) is a cloud service from Microsoft corporation.

Service gives an opportunity of storage and processing of relational data, generation of the reporting. The functionality is provided for different scenarios of synchronization of data (local <=>infrastrukturaoblako, <=>oblakooblako). Service - a part of Windows Azure.

By Windows Azure SQL Databases it is created on the Microsoft SQL Server platform, but provides only a subset of data types. The main types are supported:

  • exact and approximate numbers,
  • character strings (including Unicode),
  • date and time,
  • space data types,
  • binary data types
  • other data types.

The format based on XML for data transmission is used. As well as the Microsoft SQL Server, Windows Azure SQL Databases uses T-SQL as language of requests. Tabular Data Stream (TDS) is used as the protocol for access to service via the Internet. Under the HTTP REST protocol access is not provided. Microsoft recommends to use ADO.NET Data Services for data transmission and creation of services.

Microsoft Windows Azure SQL Databases expands possibilities of SQL Server. As a part of Windows Azure SQL Databases:

  • Windows Azure SQL Databases Data Sync is the cloud service of synchronization of data providing both the unidirectional, and bidirectional synchronization. The service Data Sync allows to exchange easily data between Windows Azure SQL Databases and local SQL Server databases and also between several Windows Azure SQL Databases databases. Windows Azure SQL Databases Data Sync uses own data provider of SqlAzureSync Provider for the engine of synchronization Microsoft Sync Frame written especially for Windows Azure SQL Databases. This new provider is effective, reduces a barrier of occurrence and provides reliability at synchronization with Windows Azure SQL Databases, a smart image processing some problems of the multirent systems, specific to Windows Azure SQL Databases. The provider reduces quantity of round trips to the server using the parameters (TVPs) returning table value. Besides, when Windows Azure SQL Databases uses the throttling mechanism for minimization of effect of the transactions SqlAzureSyncProvider getting out of hand begins to use the smart algorithm "back-off algorithm" which is automatically reducing the packet size (batch) from standard (5000 records) during synchronization.

  • Windows Azure SQL Databases Reporting — the service Microsoft Windows Azure SQL Databases Reporting allows to embed easily in the Windows application Azure of an opportunity for work with reports. Access to reports can be got through the Windows Azure portal, the web browser or directly from the application. Thanks to opportunities of a cloud need for creation and support of own infrastructure of reports disappears;

  • Windows Azure SQL Databases Federations — the federation of Windows Azure SQL Databases considerably simplifies scaling of a set of the databases placed on hundreds of nodes that allows clients to pay only for really used resources;

All connections with Windows Azure SQL Databases are without fail ciphered by SSL. By default the Windows Azure SQL Databases firewall blocks all connections with the server.
