Windows Embedded Standard is the next generation of built in operating system Windows XP Embedded.
Based on that program code new OS is delivered in a komponenty form and allows developers to use the Visual Studio environment for application development and also to use new technologies, implemented in Windows Vista for specialized devices. The updated development tools and new templates are designed to simplify build process of images and the nastroyski of devices.
2020: Termination of support of Windows Embedded Standard 7 OS
In the middle of November, 2020 Microsoft stopped support of Windows Embedded Standard 7 OS which is focused on use in specialized devices. PCs in this environment will not receive correction and security update any more, and Microsoft recommends to users to pass to Windows 10. Until then maintenance is still possible, but requires payment for registration in the ESU program available only to the enterprises. This paid solution is proposed by service till October, 2023, and the price of a subscription grows every year.
Microsoft also stopped support of Windows 7 OS in January, 2020. As well as in a case with Windows Embedded, users can receive the most important corrections and security updates for Windows 7 within the program of expanded security updates (ESU) which is available to corporate clients at additional expense. As for Windows Embedded Standard 7, according to the published data, support of this version of a software platform came to the end a month before the final declaration.
Support of Windows Embedded Standard 7 ended on October 13, 2020. As devices with Windows Embedded Standard 7 do not receive any updates any more, we recommend to users to pass to Windows 10 IoT as soon as possible. If you could not execute transition in time, Microsoft offers the ESU program as a last resort. This paid program guarantees that your devices will receive crucial security updates up to three years. In a case with Windows Embedded Standard 7 this term will end on October 10, 2023. |
Microsoft reminds that it is not recommended to use the operating system without support of the company as the lack of corrections of security and accumulation of errors can cause an array of problems.[1]
New features and opportunities in comparison with Windows XP Embedded
- Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 6.1 which supports work with Windows Server 2008 and allows producers of thin clients, POS of devices, multifunction the printer, remote monitors to use the Windows Server functions: Remote Application, server authentication (TSL/SSL), support of large-format monitors, etc.
- Microsoft Silverlight is technology of data view on the Internet, intended for start on different platforms. It allows to create the saturated, visually attractive web pages working in different observers, devices and desktop operating systems.
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 - the new version of a programming model based on managed code for the Windows platform.
- Support of corporate assets of management and service (Windows Server Update Services, System Center Configuration Manager and Microsoft Operations Manager)
- Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) is the solution which allows to scan the device based on Windows and to check the version of the operating system regarding detection of vulnerabilities and existence of the patches recommended for installation and updates of a security system.
- The simplified installation process of development tools
Term of availability and support
According to rules of licensing and support of the built-in products, the Windows Embedded operating systems have expanded support up to 10 years and availability of licenses up to 15 years. This policy provides to developers of devices more smoothly to upgrade to new versions of operating systems.
Functionality for the built-in systems
- The security filter from record.
Windows Embedded Standard includes the Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) and File Based Write Filter (FBWF) components. EWF allows to write-protect the system section and to prevent intervention in work of the built-in system. FBWF allows to protect separate files and folders and, thus, gives the chance to leave access on folders in which it is required to write files at the same time to protect a system folder.
- Support of loading from flash carriers.
Windows Embedded Standard podderzhkivat loading from the majority of sovermenny flash drives among which there are DiskOnChip Flash, PCMCIA-ATA, Compact Flash, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, and also USB 2.0 of flash disks. When using the security filter from record, developers can increase the term of work of a flash disk considerably.
- Loading from compact disks.
Windows Embedded Standard supports the standard of El Torito for loading from CD or DVDs disks.
- Remote loading.
- Autonomous works.
Windows Embedded Standard includes the mechanism of interception of system messages and allows to create devices without monitor, a mouse and the keyboard.
- Use of own cover.
Windows Embedded Standard allows to use own cover of OEM to producers instead of standard Windows Explorer and to create completely adapted devices.
Application development tools
Windows Embedded Standard completely supports Win32 API and model of drivers of Windows (WDM). It means that application developments for Windows Embedded Standard can be performed in Microsoft Visual Studio or to use any other means providing development for Windows XP Professional. In addition developers can create the applications based on managed. net Framework code 3.5
Development tools of the operating system
Preparation and installation of images Windows Embedded Standard is performed by means of special of a development tool are Windows Embedded Studio Platform Development Tool. Development tools consist of several tools:
- Target Analyzer is means for collecting and support of information on a configuration of a hardware platform
- Target Designer is tools for collecting, development and setup of images Windows Embedded Standard
- Component Designer is the database of the OS components and means for creation of own components.
- Дополнительные утилиты: Component Database; Component Database Manager; Command Line Tool; Device Templates; Footprint Estimator Tool; Component dependency checking; Create a bootable runtime image for a specific target device; Advanced component browsing
