2022: Testing the beta version of the City NGP driver assistance system on the XPeng P5 electric car
On July 9, 2022, it became known that Chinese the manufacturer electric vehicles XPeng showed tests of the beta version of the advanced City NGP driver assistance system, capable drive autonomously of urban conditions. Autopilot tested on the production XPeng P5 electric car.
The race took place in daylight hours in Guangzhou. During the race, there was an engineer in the car who held his hands on or near the steering wheel, but did not interfere in the control of the car, but only monitored the correctness of the autopilot. During testing, the car traveled 26 kilometers in fully autonomous mode, passing 34 traffic lights, while turning 14 times at intersections, passing through small traffic jams and faced other typical urban situations.
It is noteworthy that the autopilot from XPeng not only shows a map of the surrounding space with other cars and its trajectory, but also, unlike Tesla, accompanies some of its maneuvers with voice explanations that allow the driver to understand the logic of the car's actions or warn him about certain events. In addition, the P5, unlike Tesla cars, uses two front-facing lidars in addition to cameras, which give more accurate information about the distance to objects and their shape.
The internal beta of the software, which is not yet available to P5 owners, was tested. The company plans to release it after additional testing and obtaining permission from the Chinese authorities. [1].
