2025: Product Announcement

In mid-May 2025, the Chinese company Xiaomi announced its first processor designed for flagship smartphones. The chip, called the Xring O1, took about eight years to develop.

The processor will be manufactured at TSMC using 4- or 3nm technology. According to the resource GSMArena.com, the design of Xring O1 provides for the presence of eight computing cores. This is a powerful Cortex-X925 core, three high-performance Cortex-A725 cores and four energy efficient Cortex-A520 cores. Thus, the chip will provide a balance between speed and power consumption. Another component of the product is the high-performance graphics accelerator Immortalis-G925. A modem is provided for work in 5G cellular networks.

TrendForce notes that Xiaomi has formed a team of about 1,000 people to develop the Xring O1. The project was led by a former senior director of Qualcomm, who reports directly to Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun.

In terms of overall performance, the Xring O1 processor will be comparable to or even surpass the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 product. Jun said Xiaomi has organized mass production of the new chip. The first mobile devices based on it will be Xiaomi 15S Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra.

Previously, Xiaomi has already launched smartphones equipped with proprietary processors. So, in 2017, the company released the Xiaomi Mi 5C device, built on the branded Surge S1 chip. Overall, Xiaomi became the fourth smartphone brand in the world (after Apple, Samsung and Huawei) to develop its own mobile processor. However, TrendForce emphasizes, in the case of Surge S1, Xiaomi failed to achieve significant success.[1]
