ZOS

Product
Developers: IBM
Last Release Date: 2015/01/14
Technology: OS

z/OS is the proprietary 64-bit server operating system developed by IBM company for self-produced mainframes. Is further development of OS/390 operating system, integrating MVS and system services of Unix (POSIX is compatible implementation for Unix initially known as MVS OpenEdition or OpenMVS).

Containing the majority of the functions implemented in the 1970th and 1960th (in certain cases) z/OS also often offers many distinctive features and elements identical to like that in nowadays available open systems. Thus, while CICS, IMS, RACF, SNA and similar functionality still continue to be used daily, they became less noticeable, than in last years.

At the moment z/OS supports Java, Unix of API (Single UNIX Specification) and the application, and easily interacts with TCP/IP and web. The coproduct of IBM, z/VM, improves support of Linux on the same system. Support of the existing standards of functionality in z/OS and support of Linux and OpenSolaris allows to increase opportunities for future reference.

z/OS also works at mainframes of earlier architecture, than z/Architecture which worked in the 32-bit mode, and with hardware obespecheny using 24-bit addressing of memory. Nevertheless, starting with the version of z/OS V1R6 released on September 24, 2004 z/OS requires the 64-bit IBM System z servers. Support of the version of z/OS V1R5 was performed till March 31, 2007.

z/OS is the advanced OS developed by IBM intended for long work with a large number of transactions with the high level of security and stability.

Some time cheaper version of z/OS, z/OS.e identical on a program code, but working with the boot settings preventing execution of such classical carried-out tasks as COBOL and PL/I was released. z/OS.e worked at mainframes of z800, z890 and z9 BC, and customers could select, turn on these settings or not that influenced the license price. The latest version of z/OS.e announced V1.8 which support comes to an end on September 30, 2009. Now the similar problem of reduction in cost of licenses for new applications is solved by licensing of normal z/OS according to the special scheme zNALC (z New Application License Charges). Functioning of different logical partitions of a mainframe under different schemes of licensing of z/OS is possible.
