First 5G network launched in Scandinavia

Customers: Telia Company (formerly TeliaSonera)

Stockholm; Telecommunications and communications

Contractors: Nokia Corporation
Product: Integrated telecom infrastructure projects

Project date: 2021/11

On November 10, 2021, Nokia announced that it had deployed a 5G network for Telia in Finland. The company noted that this project is designed to provide higher and reliable network performance, as well as simplify the monetization of assets. We are talking about the first commercial autonomous (standalone) 5G network in Scandinavia.

Nokia also gradually introduces 5G SA Core for Telia in Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. Deployment in Finland includes the Nokia radio access network, as well as the cloud packet core and registers for consolidating subscriber data of the common repository using a distributed and flexible architecture.

The first 5G network in Scandinavia was launched, the project was implemented by Telia and Nokia

Telia Finland announced that the virtual, software and distributed autonomous core network will be deployed in several phases. At the first stage, an independent 5G network was launched for individual users in dozens of settlements in Finland.

The report also says that from the operator's point of view, the 5G autonomous network simplifies the network architecture and optimizes construction, since 5G no longer needs to connect to the coverage area of the 4G network.

Current 5G networks share signal and application data priorities with existing 4G networks, but the 5G autonomous network operates as a fully independent network, providing higher throughput, increased security, network separation functionality, and lower latency.

Telia said the deployment of Nokia is the first commercially available 5G SA network in the Northern Europe and Baltic countries. The company said it provides the bandwidth and latency needed to build private networks, implement remote management applications and automate industry. Telia will use the 5G SA network to offer Finnish subscribers guaranteed broadband access speed.

Nokia said it leads the 5G SA Core market with over 80 customers worldwide.[1]
