Rostelecom launched Smart City support in Nizhny Novgorod

2021: Installation of three "smart supports"

On August 19, 2021, Rostelecom announced that three Smart City supports were installed in Nizhny Novgorod on Gorky Square near the Communications House as part of the implemented improvement concept for the 800th anniversary of the city.

The smart support not only provides energy-efficient lighting of public space, but also has other important functions for citizens and businesses, including mobile communications, a smart lighting system, a Wi-Fi access point, a communications button with emergency services, a weather station, an alert system, as well as surveillance cameras with video analytics.

Each service can be integrated into such urban systems as Smart City, Safe Region, Smart Parking, Energy Saving Lighting.

Smart support is distinguished by design, which fits into the architectural appearance of any city. Services are managed through a cloud platform.

The development of Rostelecom is a technological product in which smart systems are compactly installed, which are in demand in large cities with a high concentration of traffic, "said Sergey Polyakov, head of Rostelecom's infrastructure projects department.

The key quality of the complex solution is the ability to connect the equipment of several mobile operators to the integrated antenna. It is compact, with low power consumption, having all the basic characteristics of conventional base stations. Each support is manufactured for specific purposes and may have multiple combinations of different systems. An important feature of the smart support is its modular structure, which in the future will allow changing the functional purpose of the designed supports with minimal capital costs.

Small architectural forms, such as street benches, can also be used to organize radio coverage. Equipment and communications in this case are placed in a special box at the base. Such constructive solutions allow us to maintain the usual appearance of urban spaces, without loading public places with communication networks.

We are glad that the start of this project was given precisely in Nizhny Novgorod on the eve of the celebration of its 800th anniversary. Light designs made in the style of industrial design will organically fit into any urban environment and can become an infrastructure element in the ecosystem of a smart city. They will not only decorate the city, but also make it more modern and technological. In the future, smart supports can be equipped with charging stations for electric scooters and cars, as well as other services useful for citizens, "said Alexander Sinelobov, director of the Nizhny Novgorod branch of Rostelecom PJSC.

Interest in the technological solution is shown by telecom operators, corporate and state customers involved in the implementation of federal and city programs, as well as developers interested in the development of current territories. The active use of smart supports will begin with the microdistricts under construction. The company intends to enter with a technological solution into housing complexes not only as a fixed-line provider, but also as an operator of infrastructure solutions. Mobile operators will be able to ensure sustainable radio coverage in high-rise neighborhoods, and developers will be able to increase the attractiveness of housing in the real estate market by introducing digital services, "said Andrei Menkov, director of communications with telecom operators at the Volga macro-regional branch of Rostelecom PJSC.

According to Konstantin Khrulkov, Director of the Rostelecom Infrastructure Project Management Department, the key role of the company in this project is to build turnkey infrastructure and maintain the lines and systems of telecom operators on the basis of the service model.
