Asteros and MISIS technologies of virtualization implement

The Asteros company created the virtualized platform in National University of Science and Technology " MISIS ". Use of means of virtualization together with instruments of personal data protection optimize loading of computing powers and provide secure access of teachers and students to extensive information resources of university.

MISIS – one of the leading Russian universities based on which training of students on modern engineering specialties is performed to information technologies, economy and management and scientific research in the priority directions of development of science and technology is conducted. Educational, scientific, administrative and business activities of the university are inconceivable without full providing with information resources. As the university actively develops, its IT platform should be reliable, productive, flexible and economic. The technology of virtualization meets all these requirements.

Specialists of Asteros to whom it was entrusted to develop a solution architecture conducted comprehensive examination of IT processes and unrolled the VMware platform on 10 servers in own laboratory. Product-based terminal clients of Citrix and Microsoft then the prepared equipment was postponed for the MISIS platform were in addition set and tested.

The created solution includes nine systems among which:

• virtualization;
• directory service of Microsoft Active Directory;
• monitoring and management of virtual environment;
• backup and data recovery;
• support of terminal access and virtual PCs;
• data storage, from 25 Tb.

In scientific and technical library MISIS 60 terminal devices were installed. These are "thin" clients who are applied to reading books and access to information resources of a system of distance learning. 20 more "fat" clients are used by students for design of processes in the academic version of SCADA system, and the staff of university for work with corporate mail, the systems of accounting and personnel records, electronic document management and Internet connection.

Ensuring personal data protection became an important task within the project – the information system of university contains data about more than 22 thousand students and teachers. Specialists of Asteros booked audit of a security system, developed model of relevant threats. The implemented hardware and software system VGate provides reliable confidential information protection in virtual environment. The solution helps to detect and prevent invasions and unauthorized access, performs the analysis of security of the IT environment, provides antivirus and cryptographic protection and also integrity of information.

Moreover, by our preliminary estimates transition to technologies of virtualization will help to reduce electricity consumption approximately four times. "Virtual IT infrastructure of MISIS has a large supply of flexibility and reliability – it is easily expanded both on functionality, and on the volume of the supported resources.
