2021: Testing of GMSSB equipment

On March 25, 2021, it became known that the GISBS equipment of the Iridium mobile satellite communication system of the LT-3100S model was tested on nuclear icebreakers in the Northern Sea Route.

FSUE Morsvyazsputnik together with LLC Iridium Communiceshens organized testing of satellite telephony and emergency communication sessions, including the delivery of IBM (information on safe navigation) using the GISBS equipment kit of the Iridium mobile satellite communication system of the Lars Thrane A/S LARS-3100S model installed on the Yamal and 50 Years of Victory nuclear icebreakers, in Arctic latitudes, including in the Northern Sea Route (NSR). Testing was carried out in coordination with the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (Rosmorrechflot) and with the support of FSUE Atomflot.

During the testing process, icebreakers made a significant journey along the NSR route, during which telephone calls and SMS messages were made daily.

Special attention was paid to the services of the GMSSB - the transmission of a distress signal from the ship and the reception on ships of information on the safety of navigation (IBM) of the NAVAREA/METAREA XX and XXI regions, which are in the area of ​ ​ responsibility of the Russian Federation. It should be noted that the transfer of IBM to ships was carried out using the capabilities of the Iridium service SafetyCast with the participation of official Russian IBM suppliers recognized by IMO. Testing of the LT-3100S satellite terminal showed that the equipment fully meets the needs of modern ships for the necessary telecommunications services.
