History

2020

The growth of revenue from communications services by 8.3% was also achieved by FSUE Morsvyazsputnik, which promotes Inmarsat and Iridium services in Russia. According to this report, revenue from the company's communication services in 2019 amounted to RUB 1.45 billion, and in 2020 - RUB 1.57 billion.

2014: Receiving frequencies for the gateway

In July 2014, FSUE Morsvyazsputnik received frequencies for the construction of an interface station in the Klinsky district of the Moscow region. This was reported to Izvestia by the director of the Department of Development Programs of the Ministry of Transport Alexei Semenov.

According to Semenov, the construction of the interface station will be financed from the proceeds from the sale of state-owned Inmarsat shares on the London Stock Exchange.

- The process of preparing for the sale of 1.15% of Inmarsat shares has begun, but when the transactions will be carried out, it is difficult to say. It is necessary to sell in such a way that the exchange rate value of the company's securities does not decrease, "says Semenov.

Depending on the specific rate, the sale of 5,265,188 ordinary shares of Inmarsat PLC will generate 2.1-2.2 billion rubles. According to Semenov, investments in infrastructure will allow Morsvyazsputnik to become a top-level operator and thereby strengthen its position in the satellite communications market.

The Inmarsat satellite communication system serves about 250 thousand subscribers worldwide (July 2014) using 10 geostationary satellites. Inmarsat does not provide global coverage - satellites "standing" above the equator do not reach the polar regions, and as a result, the system, designed mainly for communication at sea, does not work on part of the Northern Sea Route.

"Investments in the
development of Inmarsat infrastructure are justified, because the services of this operator will be in demand in the future," said Andrei Ionin, a leading analyst at the GLONASS non-profit partnership. - Life has shown that the demand for the services of such operators as Iridium and Globalstar is limited - they managed to attract 1 million subscribers for two over 15 years of work. That's their limit. The advantage of Inmarsat with its geostationary satellites is that it can deploy a new generation system on a global scale, launching only 3 new satellites, and not 66 - like Iridium. The size of subscriber equipment in the satellite communication market, unlike cellular, does not play a decisive role, because consumers mainly - specialized and equipment is installed on boats[1] aircraft[1]
