Holographic phone calls to be launched in Europe

Customers: Deutsche Telekom

Bonn; Telecommunications and Communications

Contractors: Matsuko

Project date: 2022/09

On September 21, 2022, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefonica and Vodafone entered into an agreement with Matsuko, a technology company developing 3D holograms for remote communication, to implement wireless holographic video calls.

The goal of the collaboration is to simplify holographic calls to the level of voice calls. The technology developed by Matsuko works through an app available in the App Store for iOS, Google Play for Android devices and Microsoft Store for Windows computers.

{{quote "We are convinced that in the near future we will be able to provide our customers with a new way of communicating using holography technologies that provide deeper feelings from virtual presence," said Daniel Hernandez, vice president of Telefonica for devices and everyday IoT. }} According to the four mobile operators, they intend to develop a platform that will combine real and virtual worlds through a mobile connection, using a smartphone camera to create 2D video, which will then be converted into a 3D hologram on the cloud network and broadcast to users in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) environments.

According to operators, the development of communication technologies thanks to 5G and edge computing technology will allow holograms to move smoothly and naturally, opening up a wide range of possible applications.

{{quote 'If the last two years have shown us anything, it is that we, as people, need each other's presence. And although we have come a long way in the field of remote communication, modern tools still distance us too much from each other, "says Maria Virchikova, co-founder of Matsuko. Our brain has a sense of the physical presence of people and we need that feeling. }} The fact that mobile operators are cooperating boosts consumers' chances that holographic calls will be available on many mobile networks, said Karin Dusser-Sarte, executive vice president of marketing and design at Orange Innovation.[1]
