2024: How is the digitalization of the Trans-Siberian Railway
In early May 2024, the Russian government approved the third stage of an investment project to modernize the railway infrastructure of the BAM and Transsib (Eastern landfill). The implementation of this program is expected to increase the carrying capacity of these railways from 180 million tons in 2024 to 210 million tons in 2030 and to 270 million tons in 2032.
The work will be carried out at 24 sites: 12 of them belong to the Trans-Siberian Railway, 10 to BAM. Two more lines will connect these highways to each other. Investments in the project will exceed 3.7 trillion rubles.
The President (Vladimir Putin) emphasized that the volume of traffic on BAM and Transsib is growing. These are export revenues and budget revenues. This means that additional resources are needed to resolve the social issues of our citizens, "said Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. |
The Trans-Siberian Railway is a double-track electrified railway line with a length of about 10 thousand km, equipped with modern means of informatization and communication. It is the world's longest railway. The digitalization of the highway provides for the introduction of intelligent transport systems and digital platforms for transportation management (LMS, TMS), which allow you to optimize traffic schedules, reduce delays and track the movement of goods in real time. In addition, electronic document management and smart contracts are being introduced to create a transparent and safe system for recording and confirming cargo transportation transactions.
Another area of work is digital twins. They help to predict the load of railway tracks, calculate the cost of operating rolling stock and track equipment, improve the efficiency of infrastructure maintenance, determine the optimal routes and the most efficient operating mode of the entire network. It is expected that the introduction of digital twins will help reduce the number of technical failures by up to 15% by increasing the number of detected pre-failure states, reduce train downtime by up to 12%, as well as reduce the cost of design and survey work during new construction and overhaul of infrastructure assets from 15% to 40%. Russian Railways has decided to create a unified corporate platform for maintaining technical documentation, which is the basis for a digital twin of the infrastructure.
In addition, a project called "Digital Railway Station" is being implemented. This system allows you to simulate future work with objects at different settings and choose the best way to use them. The software package monitors the duration and sequence of operations and automatically detects violations.
Rolling stock evaluation systems are also being implemented. For example, sensors, laser scanners and video cameras, which are installed on special frames at the entrances and exits of five large stations of the Trans-Siberian Railway and BAM (Taishet, Taksimo, Naushki,, Irkutsk), Ulan-Ude process data on the placement and attachment of cargo in the carriages of passing trains. Based on the collected information, the system creates a 3D model of each car and even finds a minimum displacement of the cargo along the route.
Digital models of capital construction facilities are formed, which include all data on both the object itself and its structural elements, construction site and scope of work. This helps to increase the control and transparency of business processes and reduce labor costs for design and survey work by automating processes.[1]

Taishet Station Train Control System Upgrade
Specialists of the ZHAT GK 1520 Division have modernized the train traffic control system at Taishet station - the starting point of BAM. The work is part of the Russian Railways program for the development of the Eastern landfill. The Group of Companies 1520 announced this on October 31, 2022.
In connection with the adjustment of track development, the Taishet station control system included new arrows and traffic lights, and was updated. In software 2021, the ZHAT Division introduced digital production automation at the facility Russian - a micro-centralization system processor. MPC-E The set of measures will increase the efficiency of the equipment and reduce operating costs.
The Taishet station of the East Siberian Railway is a large railway junction at the junction of the Baikal-Amur, Trans-Siberian highways and the line from Kuzbass. The reconstruction of the station will ensure an increase in cargo traffic in the direction of the Far East.
Introduction of digital traffic control at the Goujekit station in Buryatia
On September 2, 2022 GC 1520 , it announced that the specialists of the LAT Division had introduced a digital traffic control system trains at Goujekit station. East Siberian Railway
With the help processor of the micro-centralization system MPC-E, the dispatching personnel will be able to computer control arrows and traffic lights, monitor equipment parameters, and detect pre-failure states. In addition, the system is able to automatically build train routes.
The digital control systems that GK 1520 introduces at the Eastern landfill are capable of operating in the range from -40 to + 70 ° C, withstanding the special climatic conditions of the region. The integrated lightning protection system eliminates the possibility of malfunctions during lightning strikes and switching in power grids, which is important not only in areas with high thunderstorm activity, but also in any sections of the railways.
Implementation of digital motion control on two BAM distillates
Specialists of the ZHAT GK 1520 Division installed centralization and auto-blocking systems on two runs of the East Siberian Railway. The total length of the Taku-Balbukhta and Novaya Chara-Kemen sections, where digital management was introduced, is 36 km. The Group of Companies 1520 announced this on July 11, 2022.
The Taku-Balbukht stage was equipped with an innovative ALSO-E locomotive signaling system - it regulates movement by signals from locomotive traffic lights, allows you to increase throughput and reduce the inter-traffic interval.
At the 1726 km waypoint of the Novaya Chara-Kemen section, a modern microprocessor centralization system MPC-E was installed. With its help, the dispatching staff will be able to control arrows and traffic lights, as well as regulate train routes according to the specified parameters.
The introduction of automation will ensure the efficiency and safety of transportation at BAM sites.
The modernization of train control systems is part of the large-scale project RUSSIAN RAILWAY infrastructure development of the Eastern landfill. Its implementation will increase the capacity of the Baikal-Amur and Trans-Siberian railways.
