2017: Data access of the Copernicus program using Flexible Engine

The Eauropean Space Agency (ESA) selected Orange Business Services and three more groups for work on the project on ensuring access to data of the Copernicus program. Orange will provide a global cloud platform with a possibility of fast deployment of applications and also will perform expert consulting in the field of cloud computing.

Copernicus

Copernicus is the program of the European Union which will provide free access to data on our planet in real time, including satellite pictures of a surface, climatic and forecast models. Data are collected both by means of specialized satellites, and by means of local observations. This information plays an important role in ensuring global security and control of the environment. The DIAS project created within the Copernicus program uses a cloud computing architecture thanks to what the information access is open for users worldwide.

Project Tasks

Consortium of Airbus and Orange Business Services companies set for themselves the task within six months to create the uniform center of information service with a possibility of providing additional services on work with data of the program. It will help scientists, to the organizations and entrepreneurs to build business models and to develop the software, a basis for which the mentioned data will form.

Public cloud

The consortium will use public global cloud solution of Flexible Engine from Orange Business Services for ensuring security of data and providing free access to them. Flexible Engine is a highly protected and reliable public cloud solution based on OpenStack technology. The technology allows to achieve enormous scalability and to create an environment for storage, structuring and easy access to Big Data of the Copernicus program.

The analysis of Big Data and proper cloud functionality will fully help to realize the valuable potential of these data that will lead to creation of the innovation business models and economic growth of the European countries. Our experience and a public cloud solution of Flexible Engine will provide users with the advanced opportunities of use of the Big Data collected by the ESA — Philippe Laplane, the director of division of Orange Cloud for Business, Orange Business Services said.

2014: Transfer of IT infrastructure in private "cloud"

On January 13, 2014 the Orange Business Services company announced project implementation of deployment of private "cloud" by request of the European Space Agency.

Project Tasks

ESA has eight offices in the territory of Europe where more than 2.2 thousand employees work: scientists, engineers, production specialists and administrative personnel. IT department of ESA services all users, helping them to conduct different activity, including processes of modeling and testing. For the solution of these and many other tasks of ESA it was necessary to expand computing powers considerably.

Project Progress

Orange Business Services created safe cloud infrastructure with a possibility of fast selection of resources for all organization. The efficiency of the solution is reached at the expense of lower cost of computing powers and achievement of new performance level. End users can quickly receive necessary resources.

According to the contract Orange Business Services provides continuous organization activity due to providing cloud infrastructure on the basis of two redundant data processing centers. Private "cloud" provides the high level of security by means of use of a control system of access on the basis of strict role policy, existence of the protected infrastructure adapted to special requirements of different user groups of ESA.

Project Results

"We adapted private "cloud" for achievement of goals of digital transformation of ESA. The created solution represents seamless consolidation of our global network and also the best in the class, protected, scalable, flexible and high-level cloud infrastructure.
