2015: Holland began to test servers for heating of houses

On March 24, 2015 in the Netherlands the pilot project of equipment of local houses servers which will be used as heating elements started. Initiators of this project among whom there is the Dutch energy company Eneco want to understand cost efficiency of installation of computers in premises instead of unrolling them in data centers.

A developer of new technology is young company Nerdalize. It placed the servers managing cloud services of the company in five households. Systems are executed in the form of radiators of heating and fasten to a wall. They heat water in the closed system to temperature of 45-55 Celsius, it can be adjusted using the special regulator. Excess heat at the same time "is reset" on the street together with liquid which flows on a special tube. It is going to be extended in the future that the radiator could warm more than one premises.

Servers for heating of houses will help the Dutch families to save about 400 euros a year on heating

Nerdalize pays to families expenses on the electric power, but at the same time saves on space in DPCs and costs for cooling. Thanks to it service providers of data centers will be able to set quotations on average 30-55% lower in comparison with traditional cloud providers, writes the IT World edition with reference to the representative of Eneco Marcel van Dun.[1]

Consumers also will be the winner: by estimates of authors of the project, use of servers for heating of houses will allow to reduce annual costs for heating approximately by 400 euros. And as it and the same energy is applied to computing and heating needs, the negative impact decreases by ecology.

The maximum power consumption at server radiators of Nerdalize exceeds 8000 kW a year, however in fact the indicator will be less, van Doon claims.

Tests of new technology will last until the end of 2015 then Eneco will decide on whether it is worth displaying its mass level.
