Contractors: Siemens AG

Project date: 2018/07

In July, 2018 the railway operator Deutsche Bahn  and industrial concern Siemens signed the agreement on automation of a railway system. It is about the project within which the German companies will for the first time start in Germany trains without drivers and assistants at stations.

At the first stage it is going to automate completely by 2021 23-kilometer section of the railway  line S-Bahn 21 (it is used as city, suburban and near long-distance transport) between the Berliner Tor and Aumuhle stations in Hamburg. For this purpose also four trains will be upgraded. In case of successful implementation of technology it will be extended to all network S-Bahn.

The management of Deutsche Bahn and Siemens and also the authorities of Hamburg signed the agreement on automation of a railway system

For automation the European management system for train service of Automatic Train Operation will be used. It performs the following functions: train stop, opening of doors, waiting of a certain time frame. The driver should close only doors and if the way is free, the train will continue the movement automatically.

Trains with function of an auto pilot exchange data by means of a radio signal, and all processing is performed in the uniform center.

Investments into the project are estimated at 50 million euros. Expenses will divide among themselves  Deutsche Bahn and Siemens companies and also the authorities of Hamburg.

According to the head of Deutsche Bahn on infrastructure Ronald Pofall, the project with Siemens became an important milestone on the way of program implementation of digitalization of the railroad in Germany and the beginning of the most large-scale technology changes in the country marks.

Deutsche Bahn  intends to spend in 2018 the record amount for upgrade of railway infrastructure. On service and upgrade of national network 33.2 thousand km long the budget in the amount of 9.8 billion euros is put.[1]
