On October 29, 2024, it became known that the new Mercedes-Benz CLA cars will be equipped with power plants manufactured by Geely and Horse (a joint venture between Geely and Renault). We are talking about an internal combustion engine, which was designed and developed in partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Geely.
According to available information, the motor has a power of 250 horsepower (186 kW), and the maximum torque is 360 Nm. Although the unit itself is manufactured in China, the catalytic converter will be installed in Germany in accordance with the standards for emissions of harmful substances. The motor will become part of a 48-volt hybrid system.
The new CLA is built on Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). In addition to the hybrid version, the car will have a fully electric modification with a 175 kW engine installed at the back and an 89.6 kVt·ch battery. The range on a single charge will be up to 750 km (WLTC), which provides an energy consumption of 12 kVt·ch per 100 km. At the same time, a 15-minute charge will last 400 km of the way.
The engine from Geely will not be the only Chinese technology used in the CLA. The vehicle will also feature a high-level smart system developed by Chinese startup Momentum. Thus, the CLA car will be the first Mercedes-Benz with the function of helping to drive in urban conditions. Momentum was founded in 2016, and Mercedes-Benz was one of the company's first investors, taking part in the Series B funding round in 2017.
It is noted that Geely, represented by its founders and chairman of the board of directors, Li Shufu, owns about 10% of Mercedes-Benz, and also has a joint venture with the German electric vehicle company Smart.[1]
