In the middle of August, 2018 it became known of the choice of Los Angeles as the first American city in which subway scanners of passengers will be used. This equipment is intended for identification of the prohibited objects which, for example, can be used for terrorist attacks.
However in difference of the scanners installed at the airports, devices in the subway will be portable (of the size of a road suitcase). At the same time they are capable to scan up to 2 thousand people per hour from distance 9 meters. The cost of one device developed by Thruvision company is about $100 thousand.
Before in the American subway body scanners as it inevitably would lead to deceleration of the movement of a flow of people were not used. The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LAMTA) transport company managing the subway of Los Angeles tested the equipment Thruvision within a year and in August, 2018 announced start of an implementation project.
The output of the updated equipment from Thruvision became one more factor which "persuaded" administration of the subway to start body scanners. Unlike last generation modifed devices became easy to be moved between metro stations. Besides, the equipment is capable to appear through people at distance, i.e. passengers do not even need to shorten a stride for passing of fast examination.
Thruvision claims that radio wave scanners of the company are capable to detect an explosive belt, the explosives, weapon and nonmetallic objects hidden under clothes.
We are aimed at search of the weapon capable to become the terrorist attack reason with a large number of victims — the head of law enforcement agencies of LAMTA Alex Wiggins said. |
Besides, the authorities of Los Angeles are going to purchase one more model of the scanner of a body of the person in the form of a support with the television camera which is capable to be focused on individuals.[1]
