Content

On May 18, 2015 7400[1] became known of implementation in the Kuban State University of DWH of HP 3PAR of StoreServ[1].

Project Tasks

The university actively implements cloud services of providing access to the application software for students and teachers, in parallel executing transition to technologies of virtual work places of VDI. At the same time the data center of university services not only KUBSU, but also users of all regional corporate network of educational institutions of Krasnodar Krai (more than 1200).

Eventually performance of the operating DWH ceased to be enough for a full-fledged work of all applications and the management of KUBSU made the decision on installation of an additional system.

According to technical specifications new DWH should support technologies of virtualization of disk space, a possibility of adding of disks without stopping of input-output operations. From a system also support of technology of intellectual trekhurovny storage with automatic movement of the most intensively used data units of fast drives, and seldom used data – on less expensive carriers was required. The technology of separation of access of servers to disk resources (LUN masking) and a connectivity to DWH not less than 1 thousand servers also should be maintained "by default".

Specialists of IT department of the university carried out the analysis of the storage systems offered in the market, studied results of testing of different DWH and user feedback. In final results made a choice for benefit of the HP 3PAR system of StoreServ 7400.

According to Mikhail Denisov, the technical director of KUBSU: "Its advantage is the set of such parameters as the price, performance, a possibility of simultaneous operation with diverse loadings without decline in production and also a possibility of further scaling at the minimum costs — all this at a high speed of work and economy of disk space. Also the convenience of administration and flexible configuration was important for us, and conditions warranty and service maintenance became additional benefit".
"Over time the university can upgrade a storage system to 4-controller and get all advantages of technologies of HP. Unique 3PAR Full Mesh architecture of an array of HP 3PAR in which each logical volume is serviced by all controllers of a disk system with balancing of loading and also technology of remirroring of a cache Persistence Cache are key arguments when choosing by customers of a storage system of HP 3PAR" — Andrey Veresov, the business development manager of DWH, NR in Russia said.

Project Progress

Preliminary preparation for connection of DWH included setup of SAN ports and Ethernet-ports, power supply supply from modules of power distribution of PDU.

Installation of a system in IT infrastructure of KUBSU, its integration into SAN and connection to the existing system of virtualization by backup channels for ensuring fault tolerance charged to the KOMPLIT system integrator. Project implementation took about four months, but directly deployment and setup of DWH were executed in 10-12 hours. Joint efforts of specialists of IT department of the university and engineers of KOMPLIT carry out preparation of an IT environment: SAN setup, hosts and environment of virtualization. Along with it initial training of specialists of KUBSU in work with a system was provided.

Project Results

For May 18, 2015 DWH of HP 3PAR of StoreServ 7400 is used by the university for support of virtual cloud environments, infrastructure of VDI and also in operation of the corporate server of e-mail servicing more than 10 thousand mailboxes.
